Students explore Scotland during summerAugust 20, 2012
Andrew Smith, associate professor in the School of Library and Information Management at Emporia State University, took 12 students to Scotland in May. While visiting Scotland, the students visited the Information Centre of the Scottish Parliament, The University of St. Andrews Library, The Mitchell Library in Glasgow, Glasgow University Library, The National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh, and the Innerpeffray Library, the oldest public lending library in Scotland.
Students from ESU SLIM programs in Portland, Ore., and Denver, Colo., also took part in the trip. For several of them it was the first time they had met outside of the virtual classroom. One of the students, Kelli Doubledee (Centralia, Mo.) enjoyed visiting the different libraries and the students learned several important things including the way to market their profession in a changing environment, the importance of understanding the users' needs and preferences to deliver customized services, and even how to tell a good story.
