Civil War history comes alive during trip to the SouthAugust 20, 2012
Dr. Brian Miller, an assistant professor and associate chair of history for the Department of Social Sciences at Emporia State University took 10 students on a trip down south. The group spent two week exploring the southern cities of Memphis, Shiloh and Chattanooga, Tenn.; Atlanta and Savannah, Ga.; Charleston, S.C.; Tallahassee, Fla.; Mobile, Pascagoula and Vicksburg, Miss.; and New Orleans and Shreveport, La.
One of the students, Hannah Hutley (St. Marys, Kan.), a graduate student in history, said her favorite experience of the trip was when the group went to the Shiloh National Battlefield in Tennessee. Dr. Miller gave the group a tour they took part in mock artillery firing demonstration.
“The whole experience was awesome I learned a lot about the Civil War as well as Southern culture in general.” Hutley has made a display of the trip that can be found on the fourth floor of Plumb Hall.
