Third Thursday Update No. 15August 23, 2011
From David Hendricks, Memorial Union director:
August Greetings ~ Welcome New Hornets!
The Hornets Nest Resident Dining Room opened on Saturday, August 13. Our students seem very pleased with the transformation and reconceived service. We have already seen some upgrades in meal plans. Just a few details remain to be finished in this area. Through April 2012, our Skyline Room dining will be off line while renovation of that space moves forward. I encourage everyone to experience the Hornets Nest service in the meantime.
The Bulletin and Sunflower offices are currently located on the lower level of the Union across from the University Mail Center. I expect Student Publications to return to its renovated offices on the top floor of the 1925 original building by mid September. Watch Buzz In for details.
If you have not already used it, there is now a first floor public construction passage connecting the developing West Lobby with the east concourse and atrium. No longer will you need to go up and over or out and around to use the variety of services housed in the Memorial Union. In January the entire first floor of the Union will be completed. I encourage you to watch as the Evolution of Corky Display develops in the West Lobby. While the covered passage is in place this semester, we are developing plans for RSOs to schedule space on the 200’ of walls to decorate and promote the organization. More information for interested RSOs can be obtained by calling 341-5481.
Our major focus of work is finishing out Main Street, the Center for Student Involvement 0ffices, the new Student Publications Offices, and the ASG Senate Chamber. Work continues constructing the new Office of International Education and Career Services on the Terrace Level beneath the Hornets Nest for a planned relocation between semesters. Before the next Update the tile University Seal and Power E should be installed in the floor of the atrium and West Lobby. The Kanza, Flint Hills and Greek Rooms will come back online as rough, schedulable space after September 6th. These unfinished rooms will replace other rooms which go off line for complete renovation. The KSTC Colonial Ballroom and 2nd floor meeting space on the west will see renovation begin in early September.
Looking Ahead/Physical Limitation Access
Towers Complex residents can begin accessing the new Hornets Nest from the lakeside entrance right after Thanksgiving. Between September and December no elevator access to the Union Administrative Office Suite and the completed Student Publications Offices will be available due to an essential elevator tune-up. Affected students and staff having business conduct will need to call Union Administration 620-341-5901 or Student Publications 620-341-5201 for staff to assist the client remotely.
Go Hornets & have a great semester!
