Dean Steven Brown leaves ESU for Mississippi State position

August 1, 2011

Dr. Steven Brown, dean of the Emporia State University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences since 2007, has accepted an offer to become dean and associate vice president of the Meridian campus of Mississippi State University.

Brown will remain at ESU until Sept. 30, 2011, to aid the university in the transition to a new dean.

“We are grateful to Dean Brown for the many ways he has improved our College of Liberal Arts and Sciences,” said Tes Mehring, ESU’s provost and vice president for academic affairs and student life.

Particularly, Brown with the aid of his colleagues restructured the bachelor of interdisciplinary studies degree, creating a more academically coherent and viable program. In addition, he has assisted colleagues working to create an assessment model for general education at ESU and developing new ways to improve academic advising within the college.

Brown has also encouraged funding of an undergraduate research program that provides talented ESU students the opportunity to work on research projects with faculty.

“I will always recall the incredible accomplishments of faculty colleagues and students, in the classroom, lab, studio and performance hall,” Brown said. “The work of these talented folks has been, and will continue to be, a priceless treasure for the university, the city and the state.”

Before coming to ESU, Brown served as chair of the Department of Music at the University of Mississippi in Oxford. He then became an associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts in that institution.

Originally from eastern Arkansas, Brown received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from Arkansas State University. He completed a doctorate in music education at the University of North Texas.
