New Emporia State logo, design lets university honor its heritage

July 16, 2012

A new logo and website design unveiled today by Emporia State University honors the institution’s past while looking ahead to its 150th anniversary celebration beginning Feb. 15, 2013.

“From the moment I arrived at Emporia State six months ago, I wanted us to brand the university in a way that reflected its quality, history, heritage and traditions,” said Dr. Michael D. Shonrock, Emporia State president. “What better way to express these attributes than to use the university’s 150th anniversary logo on all our materials — including our stationery and website?”

As part of planning for the university’s sesquicentennial, Emporia State Art Director Kat Dorcas designed a special logo.

“This was a collaborative effort that just grew after Kat designed the 150th logo,” said Bill Noblitt, director of marketing and media relations, who oversaw the new branding. “Kat and our webmaster Umair Abbasi worked together to design the new look for the website.”

The new logo incorporates the Emporia State seal, which features a line drawing of Plumb Hall, the school’s administration building. The branding effort also includes the wordmark, “Changing Lives Since 1863,” a value that Shonrock has emphasized since taking the helm on Jan. 3.

The university’s Power E, which was launched in 1998, will continue to be seen on promotional and novelty items and used by the athletic department.
