Third show of Summer Theatre season is 'Drinking Habits'

July 2, 2013

Emporia State University Theatre is proud to present Tom Smith’s "Drinking Habits," a farce that is second to “nun.” Winner of the 2004 Robert J. Pickering Award for Excellence in playwriting, this zany farce is sure to have audiences rolling in the aisles.

"Drinking Habits" is the story of two nuns, Sister Philamena (Aubrey Near, Senior, Independence) and Sister Augusta (Madison Hoge, Junior, University of Nebraska- Kearney) of the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing who have kept the doors to their convent open by making, bottling and selling wine. When two reporters, (and former lovers) Paul (Alum Noah Mefford, Burlington) and Sally (Marah Melvin, Senior, Iola) go undercover as a nun and priest, their presence, combined with the addition of a new nun, Sister Mary Catherine (Kylie Geiman, Sophomore, Louisburg) spurs paranoia throughout the convent.

Afraid of being shut down, wine and secrets are spilled in an attempt to preserve the convent. The leaders of the convent, Mother Superior and Father Chenille are played by Samaria Fleeing (Senior, Emporia) and Michael Stauffer (Senior, Newton). Their efforts to sort out the slamming doors, a magician's trunk, cases of wine and mysterious visitors from Rome only add to the confusion and the laughs.

The production is under the direction of Jim Bartruff. Rick Rasmussen is the set and costume designer.  Mark Warner (Sound Design, Senior, Salina), Kelly Roberts (Assistant to the costume designer, Senior, Hutchinson), and Lexey Jost (Stage Manager, Senior, Hutchinson) will be busy behind the scenes. "Drinking Habits" runs July 10–13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Karl C. Bruder theatre. Individual tickets and season passes are available from the university box office at 620-341-6378.
