First Ervay Family Award recognizes physical fitness curriculum improvements

During his career in education, Dr. Stuart Ervay wanted to better understand the teaching field and discover ways to improve it.  As executive director of the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence, Ervay coined the term “applied scholarship” to describe the scholarly approaches that education professionals use to acquire more information about teaching and learning.

Now, Ervay and his family have created a way to celebrate the scholarly activity that full-time faculty members of The Teachers College at Emporia State conduct to improve educational programs.

The first Ervay Family Award for Applied Scholarship, presented Tuesday, May 14, recognizes the development of initiatives to improve the quality of physical fitness activities, curriculum and teachers.

A team of four Emporia State University faculty members — Drs. Joan Brewer, Kathy Ermler, Joella Mehrhof and Vicki Worrell — embarked on a scholarly journey that has produced curriculum materials addressing the fundamental need for children to participate in physical activity.

“I found this application to be a very professional collection of an important body of work and certainly deserving of the Ervay Family Award for Applied Scholarship,” noted one reviewer.

Emporia State University, The Teachers College and the Emporia State University Foundation are grateful to the Ervay family for this gift recognizing positive influences on student learning.

The Teachers College also expresses appreciation to the Ervay Award review committee — Paul Bland, professor of school leadership/middle and secondary teacher education; Elizabeth Dobler, professor of elementary education, early childhood, and special education; and Michael Richard, associate professor of counselor education.
