Music and poetry on tap Friday nightApril 4, 2012
Dinner and live entertainment are the draw Friday night at Wheat State Pizza in Emporia.
“The Icebox: Live R&B Music & Poetry Lounge” begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Wheat State, 1120 Commercial St. It’s sponsored by Emporia State’s Office of Multicultural Affairs and Black Student Union
Featured artists will be vocalist Wanda Jae of Kansas City, Kan., and Lee Langston of Prototype from Kansas City, Mo. Several Emporia State students will also participate in the Painters & Poets portion of the night.
Jae, is a native of Kansas City, Kan., and a veteran of the music scene there. She’s worked with local artists O’Dell Talley of Groove Agency, Jason Betts and the Esquire Band. Her musical influences include Whitney Houston, Fantasia, Ledisi, Patti LaBelle, Marian Anderson and Ella Fitzgerald. She has been described as an energetic vocalist whose stage presence is uncanny. Her no-holds-barred attitude sets her apart from the rest and keeps her recognized as one of the few to bring soul back into today’s rhythm and blues and neo-soul.
Langston, born in Tulsa and raised in Kansas City, Mo., is the founder and lead singer for Prototype, an R&B/neo-soul band. A facilitator of numerous themed shows and tributes in the Kansas City-metropolitan area, Langston can be seen performing at a multitude of historical venues like The Juke House or the Blue Room on 18th and Vine in the Kansas City Jazz District.
The Icebox event is open to all. Admission costs $8, which includes a 10-inch pizza, all-you-can-eat salad bar and soft drink with live music and poetry.
