THIRD THURSDAY UPDATE #20 ~ 01/19/2012
Memorial Union Renovation Project
David Hendricks, Director
2012 marks the Memorial Union’s 90th anniversary later in August when it was incorporated to begin fund raising to build what became the 15th oldest student union in the world. Our Memorial Union is the eighth oldest student union in the United States, the second student-military memorial union, and the first union building west of the Mississippi River. Over the holiday break our memorial plaques were hung in the east atrium. More informational panels will soon be installed alongside the plaques. I invite you to take your break in the atrium lounge to view the plaques and cozy up by the gas fireplace.
Campus Visits by prospective students and families base out of the atrium lounge which seems to be working well facilitating the visits several days each week. The Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting will be held for the first time in Webb Hall later this month. Last week, Kansas State University Program professional staff and graduate assistants visited the Union for a professional exchange retreat with ESU peers. They liked what they saw.
I’m happy to report that the Webb Hall/Mail Center elevator has been serviced and will be open for use on January 23rd. Work on the KSTC Colonial Ballroom, Skyline Room and other second floor meeting spaces continues on pace. Framing is 80% complete. Electrical is at 50%. Ductwork and mechanical is at 40% while fire suppression is 20% installed.
Before the next Update in February Main Street on first floor will open. Until then please continue to use the up-and-over construction passage connecting the east and west sides of our building. I know it is awkward and inconvenient but it is warm. Career Services plans a transition into our building around February 1. We welcome our new neighbors.
Happy Kansas Day (Jan. 29th) & Founders’ Day (observed on Feb. 14th). Go Hornets!
