Admission Policies for Nursing Transfer Students - 2009
A student who has attended but not completed another registered nursing program may apply for admission to the Newman Division of Nursing (NDN) at Emporia State University (ESU). This student, referred to as a nursing transfer student, must complete the same prerequisite course requirements and progression policies as NDN generic students. Admission to the nursing major is also dependent on available openings. A review process is used to determine the transfer of nursing credits from the previous program to the NDN.
Admission Requirements:
- Admission to Emporia State University
- Completion of Application for Admission to Nursing Major
A. Complete NDN application requirements and submit application to the NDN office. Although applications for admission to the nursing major are due MAY 1 for August entry, individual transfer students may be accepted as openings are available. Refer to the Application Procedure section ofthis document for details. Dates in the Application Procedure, Evaluation, and Acceptance sections of this document may be modified for transfer students. Allow at least 4 weeks for the review of the application and all submitted materials.
B. Submit copies of all nursing course syllabi and other educational materials from the previous nursing program(s) to the NDN office. An initial review of the student's transcript(s) and syllabi will be made by the Chair or Articulation Advisor. The Chair or Articulation Advisor also will distribute the submitted syllabi and materials to NDN faculty. The NDN faculty will review submitted syllabi and materials to determine possible equivalency to specific NDN courses. The NDN faculty will submit written recommendations to the Admissions Committee regarding the equivalency of the transfer courses.
C. Two letters of reference from prior nursing faculty of the student's choice are required. In addition, letters of reference are required from course faculty of all nursing courses in which the student was not successful. All letters must be mailed directly from the prior nursing faculty to the NDN office. All letters will be considered a component of the application.
D. The application materials will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee to determine if the applicant meets the requirements for admission. Refer to the Evaluation section in this document for details. The Admissions Committee will use the faculty recommendations to identify the class/course placement of the transfer student if accepted.

Evaluation:
Admission to the nursing program is of a competitive nature based on the applicant pool. Fulfillment of the minimum NDN admission criteria does not guarantee admission. Factors given consideration during candidate selection include admission GPA, pre-admission test score, written interview responses, and potential to complete the program. Final applicants accepted to the program will include the most qualified based on the overall applicant pool. All applicants will receive a notification letter by July 1.
Each applicant is considered individually without regard to age, race, color, religion, gender, national origin or ancestry, sexual orientation, disability, Vietnam Veterans status, or other factors which lawfully cannot be considered.
The Division reserves the right to refuse admission or progression to an applicant or student who cannot meet, with reasonable accommodations, the functional abilities to practice safely and effectively as defined by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (1996).
Be advised that by current Kansas law, the Kansas State Board of Nursing may refuse licensure to applicants with certain misdemeanors and felonies. For more information, contact the state board of nursing in the state where you intend to practice. The NDN reserves the right to refuse admission or progression to an applicant or student who has been convicted as a felon or has otherwise committed offenses inappropriate for entering the nursing profession.
Acceptance:
Applicants selected for admission must return the Verification for Admission
form to the NDN office by the specified date.
Nursing Skills Competency - Nursing transfer students only
A transfer student must be competent in nursing skills taught in the NDN nursing courses that are prerequisite to the level the transfer student will be placed in the Division. Upon acceptance the student will be provided the appropriate skills validation documents. The documents must be completed by previous nursing course faculty and returned directly to the NDN office by the faculty at least one week prior to the first week of classes. Based on a review of the documents the student may be required to do additional validation of skills.
Health Insurance
Each nursing student is required to have accident and health insurance
in effect at all times that the student is participating in Newman Division
of Nursing activities. Emporia State University and the Newman Division
of Nursing do not assume responsibility for any premium, co-payment, or
any other costs associated with the insurance coverage. Each student must
notify the Division if, for any reason, a lapse in coverage has occurred.
Each student will complete a notarized Student Verification of Health
Insurance Coverage form and submit it to the NDN office during the
first week of classes.
Health Requirements
The physical examination, dental examination, TB skin test, and immunization
reports are required after July 1 and prior to September 15.
CPR Certification Requirement
CPR certification is required prior to any practicum experience and must
remain current during the entire practicum.
Background Check
Learning in clinical settings is an important aspect of the nursing program
at Emporia State University. Many health care facilities require information
about students engaged in clinical learning opportunities, including,
but not limited to: verification of name; address and social security
number; personal health information; drug and alcohol testing; criminal
background checks; verification of education; listing on any registered
sex offender lists; listing on the U.S. Office of Inspector General's
Excluded Individual's list; and listing on the U.S. General Services Administration's
Excluded Parties List.
While the Newman Division of Nursing may assist students in obtaining
and gathering information required by a health care facility, the student
is responsible for the cost of obtaining such information. The information
required to permit a student to participate in a clinical setting is determined
by the respective health care facility. Any student who does ot consent
to required disclosure or background checks, or does not meet the clinical
settings' eligibility requirements, may not be allowed to enter clinical
settings. If a student is unable to fulfill the clinical experiences required
by his/her program of study, the student may be unable to graduate.
Time Limit for Completion of Degree Requirements
Requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree must be completed within five years of the admission to the NDN for generic and articulating students. Students transferring into the NDN from another nursing program must complete the NDN's curriculum within 5 years if admitted as a NDN sophomore, 4 years if admitted as a NDN junior and 2 years if admitted as a NDN senior.
Non-Acceptance:
Applicants not accepted may be placed on a waiting list of qualified
applicants. The NDN chair notifies individuals in order of ranking on
the waiting list if openings become available.
Re-application
An applicant who is not admitted to the Newman Division of Nursing may
re-apply for the next admission period by submitting a new application
and following the steps in the Application Procedure section of this document.
The application fee must be paid for each year an application is processed.
