Admission Policies for Articulating Students, BSN Degree Completion for RNs - 2009

A student who has completed a nursing program and is licensed to practice nursing in Kansas may apply for admission with advanced standing to the Newman Division of Nursing (NDN) at Emporia State University (ESU). The NDN may admit up to ten students with advanced standing every year. These students are referred to as articulating students.

Admission Requirements

  • Graduation from a National League for Nursing (NLN) or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) Accredited Program
The student must be a graduate from a NLN or NLNAC accredited program leading to the diploma or associate degree in nursing.

  • Current Kansas Licensure Without Restrictions as a Registered Nurse

  • Admission to Emporia State University

  • Completion of the NDN Application Procedure
Applications for admission to the nursing major are due MAY 1 for August entry. Refer to the Application Procedure in this document for details.

  • Completion of Amission Prerequisite Courses
Refer to the Curriculum Plan for Articulating RN Students section in this document.  Applicants who need to complete no more than 6 nursing prerequisite hours in summer school should submit with the application a written request for special consideration.

  • Achievement of at least the Minimum Admission Grade Point Average (GPA)
Grades earned in the admission prerequisite courses will be used to calculate the NDN admission GPA. A minimum NDN admission GPA of 2.5 with at least a C in the admission prerequisite courses is required.

Methods of Validation for Advanced Standing
Past professional experiences and prior nursing knowledge of the articulating RN student can be validated by one or more of the following methods:

  1. After applying for admission to NDN, the RN student can qualify for advanced standing by having successfully completed the NCLEX-RN national exam within the last ten years. The student's current Kansas RN license will serve as proof of the successful completion of the NCLEX-RN. The RN student who qualifies for advanced standing will be granted a total of 28 nursing credit hours and 3 credit hours for ZO365 Pathophysiology. Course credit earned by advanced standing will be posted to the student's transcript after successful completion of the first semester of the senior year in the NDN program.

  2. After applying for admission to NDN, the RN student who has successfully completed the NCLEX-RN more than ten years ago, can qualify for advanced standing if the student has worked 1000 hours as a RN during the past three years. The student would need to provide proof of employment from the employer. The RN student who qualifies for advanced standing will be granted a total of 28 nursing credit hours and 3 credit hours for ZO365 Pathophysiology. Course credit earned by advanced standing will be posted to the student's transcript after successful completion of the first semester of the senior year in the NDN program.

  3. After applying for admission to NDN, the RN student who has successfully completed the NCLEX-RN more than ten years ago and who has not worked 1000 hours as a RN during the past three years, can qualify for advanced standing through the successful completion of the National League for Nursing (NLN) ACE-I and II exams. These are four separate exams: ACE I: Foundations of Nursing and ACE II: Care of the Adult Client, Care of the Client during Childbearing and Care of the Child, and Care of the Client with a Mental Disorder. The ACE I: Foundations of Nursing and ACE II: Care of the Adult Client must be taken before July 1 of the admission year. The ACE II: Care of the Client during Childbearing and Care of the Child, and Care of the Client with a Mental Disorder must be successfully completed prior to enrolling in NU410.

To successfully complete each exam, the student must correctly answer at least 70% of the questions of the ACE I: Foundations of Nursing and obtain a decision score of at least 85 on all three ACE II booklets. Students who do not pass an exam will enroll in the courses for which they were seeking credit for Advanced Placement.

Subsequent to successful completion of all Nursing ACE booklets, 28 of the required 59 credit hours in nursing and ZO365 Pathophysiology (3 credit hours) will be transcripted. Credit earned through advanced standing will be transcripted after the first semester of the senior year to NDN. See "Nursing Courses" in this document.

Information about the exam, cost, availability, dates and hours of testing can be obtained from the Division's articulation advisor. Testing dates are determined after receipt of the tests. There is a non-refundable fee charged by NLN for the nursing ACE test booklet. The student pays the cost for the test booklet through the Division office when the book is ordered.

  4. The RN student may meet the requirements of the NU363 Health Assessment course by successful completion of a performance challenge examination evaluating physical assessment knowledge and skills. The student must enroll in the course.

  5. The RN student may meet the requirements of portfolio option courses (see nursing course list on page 5) by successful completion of a portfolio that provides materials documenting the student's theoretical and clinical knowledge of content specific to the course. The student must enroll in the course.

Additional information about all methods of validation can be obtained from the NDN articulation advisor.

Individualized Curriculum Plan
An individualized curriculum plan that is based on the student's previous programs of study and success in validating prior knowledge will be completed for each articulating RN student. The student must consult as soon as possible with the NDN articulation advisor to develop a plan of study and to determine eligibility to use specific methods of validation. The guidelines for validation methods are available from the NDN articulation advisor or through the NDN office.

Orientation
Students admitted to the nursing major must meet with the articulation advisor for orientation information.

Evaluation:

Admission to the nursing program is of a competitive nature based on the applicant pool. Fulfillment of the minimum NDN admission criteria does not guarantee admission. Factors given consideration during candidate selection include GPA, written interview responses, and potential to complete the program. Final applicants accepted to the program will include the most qualified based on the overall applicant pool. All applicants will receive a notification letter by July 1.

Each applicant is considered individually without regard to age, race, color, religion, gender, national origin or ancestry, sexual orientation, disability, Vietnam Veterans status, or other factors which lawfully cannot be considered.

The Division reserves the right to refuse admission or progression to an applicant or student who cannot meet, with reasonable accommodations, the functional abilities to practice safely and effectively as defined by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (1996).

Be advised that by current Kansas law, the Kansas State Board of Nursing may refuse licensure to applicants with certain misdemeanors and felonies. For more information, contact the state board of nursing in the state where you intend to practice. The NDN reserves the right to refuse admission or progression to an applicant or student who has been convicted as a felon or has otherwise committed offenses inappropriate for entering the nursing profession.

Acceptance:

Applicants selected for admission must return the Verification for Admission form to the NDN office by the specified date.

Health Insurance
Each nursing student is required to have accident and health insurance in effect at all times that the student is participating in Newman Division of Nursing activities. Emporia State University and the Newman Division of Nursing do not assume responsibility for any premium, co-payment, or any other costs associated with the insurance coverage. Each student must notify the Division if, for any reason, a lapse in coverage has occurred. Each student will complete a notarized Student Verification of Health Insurance Coverage form and submit it to the NDN office during the first week of classes.

Health Requirements
The physical examination, dental examination, TB skin test, and immunization reports are required after July 1 and prior to September 15.

CPR Certification Requirement
CPR certification is required prior to any practicum experience and must remain current during the entire practicum.

Background Check
Learning in clinical settings is an important aspect of the nursing program at Emporia State University. Many health care facilities require information about students engaged in clinical learning opportunities, including, but not limited to: verification of name; address and social security number; personal health information; drug and alcohol testing; criminal background checks; verification of education; listing on any registered sex offender lists; listing on the U.S. Office of Inspector General's Excluded Individual's list; and listing on the U.S. General Services Administration's Excluded Parties List.

While the Newman Division of Nursing may assist students in obtaining and gathering information required by a health care facility, the student is responsible for the cost of obtaining such information. The information required to permit a student to participate in a clinical setting is determined by the respective health care facility. Any student who does ot consent to required disclosure or background checks, or does not meet the clinical settings' eligibility requirements, may not be allowed to enter clinical settings. If a student is unable to fulfill the clinical experiences required by his/her program of study, the student may be unable to graduate.

Time Limit for Completion of Degree Requirements
Requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree must be completed within five years of the admission to the NDN for generic and articulating students.  Students transferring into the NDN from another nursing program must complete the NDN's curriculum within 5 years if admitted as a NDN sophomore, 4 years if admitted as a NDN junior and 2 years if admitted as a NDN senior.

Non-Acceptance:

Applicants not accepted may be placed on a waiting list of qualified applicants. The NDN chair notifies individuals in order of ranking on the waiting list if openings become available.

Re-application
An applicant who is not admitted to the Newman Division of Nursing may re-apply for the next admission period by submitting a new application and following the steps in the Application Procedure section of this document. The application fee must be paid for each year an application is processed.
