Methods of Validation for Advanced Standing:

After applying for admission to NDN, the LPN student has the opportunity to validate prior nursing knowledge and experience.

1) The LPN student can qualify for advanced standing by having successfully completed the NCLEX-PN national exam within the last ten years. The student's current Kansas LPN license will serve as proof of the successful completion of the NCLEX-PN.

2) The LPN student who has successfully completed the NCLEX-PN more than ten years ago, can qualify for advanced standing if the student has worked 1000 hours as a LPN during the past three years. The student will need to provide proof of employment from the employer.

3) The LPN student who has successfully completed the NCLEX-PN more than ten years ago and who has not worked 1000 hours in the past three years can qualify for advanced standing through the successful completion of the National League for Nursing (NLN) ACE I Exam Foundations of Nursing. Information about the exam, cost, availability, dates and hours of testing can be obtained from the Division's articulation advisor. Testing dates are determined after receipt of the tests. The exam must be taken by October 1 of the admission year. There is a non-refundable fee charged by NLN for the nursing ACE test booklet. The student pays the cost for the test booklet through the Division office and when the book is ordered.

The LPN student who qualifies for advanced standing will be granted a total of five (5) nursing credit hours for the following NDN courses: NU303, 304 and 305. Course credit earned by advanced standing will be posted to the student's transcript after successful completion of the first semester of the senior year in the NDN program.

Evaluation:

Admission to the nursing program is of a competitive nature based on the applicant pool. Fulfillment of the minimum NDN admission criteria does not guarantee admission. Factors given consideration during candidate selection include admission GPA, pre-admission test score, written interview responses, and potential to complete the program. Final applicants accepted to the program will include the most qualified based on the overall applicant pool. All applicants will receive a notification letter by July 1.

Each applicant is considered individually without regard to age, race, color, religion, gender, national origin or ancestry, sexual orientation, disability, Vietnam Veterans status, or other factors which lawfully cannot be considered.

The Division reserves the right to refuse admission or progression to an applicant or student who cannot meet, with reasonable accommodations, the functional abilities to practice safely and effectively as defined by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (1996).

Be advised that by current Kansas law, the Kansas State Board of Nursing may refuse licensure to applicants with certain misdemeanors and felonies. For more information, contact the state board of nursing in the state where you intend to practice. The NDN reserves the right to refuse admission or progression to an applicant or student who has been convicted as a felon or has otherwise committed offenses inappropriate for entering the nursing profession.

Acceptance:

Applicants selected for admission must return the Verification for Admission form to the NDN office by the specified date.

Health Insurance
Each nursing student is required to have accident and health insurance in effect at all times that the student is participating in Newman Division of Nursing activities. Emporia State University and the Newman Division of Nursing do not assume responsibility for any premium, co-payment, or any other costs associated with the insurance coverage. Each student must notify the Division if, for any reason, a lapse in coverage has occurred. Each student will complete a notarized Student Verification of Health Insurance Coverage form and submit it to the NDN office during the first week of classes.

Health Requirements
The physical examination, dental examination, TB skin test, and immunization reports are required after July 1 and prior to September 15.

CPR Certification Requirement
CPR certification is required prior to any practicum experience and must remain current during the entire practicum.

Background Check
Learning in clinical settings is an important aspect of the nursing program at Emporia State University. Many health care facilities require information about students engaged in clinical learning opportunities, including, but not limited to: verification of name; address and social security number; personal health information; drug and alcohol testing; criminal background checks; verification of education; listing on any registered sex offender lists; listing on the U.S. Office of Inspector General's Excluded Individual's list; and listing on the U.S. General Services Administration's Excluded Parties List.

While the Newman Division of Nursing may assist students in obtaining and gathering information required by a health care facility, the student is responsible for the cost of obtaining such information. The information required to permit a student to participate in a clinical setting is determined by the respective health care facility. Any student who does ot consent to required disclosure or background checks, or does not meet the clinical settings' eligibility requirements, may not be allowed to enter clinical settings. If a student is unable to fulfill the clinical experiences required by his/her program of study, the student may be unable to graduate.

Time Limit for Completion of Degree Requirements
Requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree must be completed within five years of the admission to the NDN for generic and articulating students.  Students transferring into the NDN from another nursing program must complete the NDN's curriculum within 5 years if admitted as a NDN sophomore, 4 years if admitted as a NDN junior and 2 years if admitted as a NDN senior.

Non-Acceptance:

Applicants not accepted may be placed on a waiting list of qualified applicants. The NDN chair notifies individuals in order of ranking on the waiting list if openings become available.

Re-application
An applicant who is not admitted to the Newman Division of Nursing may re-apply for the next admission period by submitting a new application and following the steps in the Application Procedure section of this document. The application fee must be paid for each year an application is processed.
