NURSING PRE-ADMISSION TEST

Completion of a standardized pre-admission test is one component of the application process for admission to ESU Newman Division of Nursing.  The TEAS has been designated as the required test and must be completed before May 1 of the application year.  Students are responsible for reserving a test date and time and for paying the costs associated with the pre-admission test.

What is the TEAS?

Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) -- The TEAS is designed to predict the academic readiness of applicants prior to admission into a program of study in nursing.  The four subtests are math, science, English, and reading.

The Math subtest covers whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions and decimals, algebraic equations, percentages, and ratio/proportion.

Reading covers paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions.

The English subtest measures knowledge of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words, and spelling.

The Science portion of the exam covers science reasoning, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, basic physical principles, and general science.

When are test dates?

Test dates for 2009 to be announced.

Testing location?

The TEAS for ESU Newman Division of Nursing applicants will be administered at the Newman Division of Nursing, Cora Miller Hall, 1127 Chestnut Street, Emporia, Kansas. 

What is the cost and how do I register for the test?

The cost of the TEAS is $21.40 and must be paid in advance when registering for a test date.  Registration forms will be distributed with ESU NDN applications which are available beginning January 2009.  A registration form may also be printed from the nursing web site after January 1.

Is the test timed?

Yes, the individual sections are timed as follows: Reading 50 min (40 questions); Math 56 min (45 questions); Science 38 min (30 questions); and English 65 min (55 questions).

May I use a calculator?

No, the use of calculators is not allowed for the TEAS test.  Calculations may be written on a sheet of paper.

Is there a required score?

The TEAS is scored as a percent correct score on each area tested and a composite score.  The scores will be used as one component of the selection process for admission to ESU Newman Division of Nursing.  Preferred scores are at least:  65% in English, 50% in Math, 65% in Reading, 50% in Science, and 70% composite.

Is it possible to study for the test?

The test has been developed by Assessment Technologies Institute, LLC (ATI).  A TEAS pre-test study manual and an online practice assessment are available for a cost through the company.  There is also a live chat option available on the ATI website.  Information about the pre-test products can be obtained by calling ATI at (800) 667-7531 or visit www.atitesting.com

What if I have taken the test already?

If you have taken the test within the past 2 years (since May 1, 2006) you may request that ATI forward results by email to the Coordinator at ESU Newman Division of Nursing.
