MINORITY STUDENT RETENTION PROGRAM

What is E.D.G.E.?

EDGE start

 

The EDGE is a student retention program designed to tutor and mentor minority students. EDGE offers peer mentoring, academic tutoring, and monthly academic sessions on study skills success. It is located in the lower level of Memorial Union (by the Hornets Nests). The office hours are:

Monday: 2pm to 6pm
Tuesday: 11am to 12:30pm
Wednesday: 10am to 12:30pm
Drop-in tutoring: 7pm to 9pm
Thursday: Closed
Friday: By appointment

The EDGE program successfully adjusts to life at Emporia State University.  The change from high school or community college to a four-year school can be challenging.  As our name suggests, we want to share strategies that will that will give you that extra EDGE to help ensure your success.

The EDGE will assist you with your transition to ESU, and through specifically designed programs and services, work to foster academic achievement, social integration, and personal success.

Who is eligible to be an EDGE member?

  • You must be a Emporia State University minority student, (African American, Hispanic American, Asian American/Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Biracial or Multiracial)

  • You cannot already be a member of another mentoring program, including TRIO Programs (Project Challenge)

 

What will the EDGE Program offer you?

  • Overnight orientation program for EDGE students only
  • Academic tutoring from a current successful ESU student
  • An immediate support system
  • Information on campus policies and services
  • College survival skills
  • Time management skills
  • Goal setting strategies
  • Personalized mentoring sessions and group sessions
  • Academic success seminars/workshops
  • Personal, educational, and cultural support

 

As an EDGE member, you will be provided with a successful ESU student and meet with her/him weekly for free tutoring in general education courses (math, science, English, psychology, etc.).  You will also be required to attend educational workshops with other EDGE students and tutors.  There will be opportunities to socialize as well. 

EDGE is a simple way to make your experience at Emporia State University a more successful one.  It is a free program—the only investment is your time and desire to succeed.  The payback, however, will last you the rest of your time at Emporia State University and beyond.
