Get involved with Spanish

The Emporia State University School of Business and the Foreign Language Department is sponsoring several programs to enable students to become more aware of, interested in, and a part of the international community with the opportunity to learn and use your Spanish speaking skills.
The objective of the program is to increase students’ comfort level with the Spanish language enabling them to carry on a conversation in Spanish, and to live briefly in Costa Rica improving language and cultural skills.

Spanish speaking skills

The Spanish language program starts with a six week, 2 credit hour, Survival Spanish I course that may be coupled with an additional two hour Intensive Survival Spanish II course. Both courses are offered during the fall 2002 and spring 2003 semester. Professor Esperanza Andresen will teach the courses so that even those without a language background, but with a desire to learn, can gain enough skill to carry on a comfortable conversation.

There will be 3 immersion Weekends where each student will exercise their Spanish speaking skills and interact with Spanish speaking business people and others of the Spanish culture. Emphasis will be on learning the Spanish language and culture preparing for the three week Costa Rica experience.

Student Business and Language Educational

The educational trip to Costa Rica offers morning visits to local Hispanic businesses and visits with local business people. Afternoons, four hours, are for learning and practicing Spanish speaking skills and reviewing the local business visits. Evenings and weekend are for enjoyment and Spanish practice at local sites with local people.

Please bring this new multi cultural program to attention of your students.

The School of Business and the Modern Languages and Literatures Department have recognized the need to offer student the opportunity to internationalize their university business degree. The international approach starts with a 2 credit hour Survival Spanish course on Monday and Wednesday evenings for the first ½ of the semester. During the second ½ of the semester an additional 2 hour Intensive Survival Spanish course is offered on the same nights. During the semester there will be several one credit hour Immersion weekends. A total of 5 hours can be received by taking the courses and the Immersion experiences. These hours can be used to help fulfill the general education language requirement or can be used as general business credits and a maximum of three hours for the management or marketing major elective courses.

Business students can also improve their Spanish language skills further by enrolling in up to seven hours of credit for the Costa Rica study program. The Costa Rican trip between May 17 to June 7, 2002
