Summer in France

What Credit Will I Receive?

ESU Summer in France offers six hours of ESU credit: 3 hours of Intensive Language Review and 3 hours of Seminar in French Culture.

Intensive Language Review (3 credit hours):

This course represents your language study 4 mornings and 2 afternoons per week at the Institut de Touraine.  On the first day of classes each student takes a placement exam, and is placed into one of nine levels based on his or her test score.  Students are of course required to attend classes and to complete all tests and assignments.  Grades will be converted from the French scale (X/20) to the American scale (ABC) by the program director at her discretion.  Course materials will be provided as part of the Institut's fees.

If a student places into level 5 or above, he or she may opt to have this course replace ESU French major requirement FR 359: Advanced Grammar and Composition.

Seminar in French Culture (3 credit hours):

Students participating in ESU Summer in France will receive credit for their cultural experiences
(including popular  culture, history, and literature).  Requirements for this course include keeping a daily culture journal, to be turned in upon the student's return to the States, along with a 5-page paper detailing how the experience has changed his or her way of thinking about him/herself, the U.S., France, and the world in general.  Also required are attendance at bi-weekly local excursions, longer weekend excursions, as well as readings relating to the cities/monuments/châteaux visited.

La Princesse de Clèves , a novel by Madame de Lafayette (1678) featuring historical characters from the court of Henri II who inhabited many of the Loire châteaux, will also be required reading for the class.

If a student wishes, he or she may opt to have this course replace ESU French major requirement FR 379: Civilization of Francophone Countries.
