Dr. Abdelilah Salim Sehlaoui

Connecting the name to a picture!

Dr. Sehlaoui is Associate Professor of TESOL Teacher Education and Applied Linguistics.  He has been Director of TESOL Teacher Education Programs at Emporia State University since 1999. He is KATESOL President 2007-2008. He was awarded the ESU Presidential Award for Distinguished Service to Diversity in December 2001. Dr. Salim Sehlaoui is the academic advisor of both ESOL Licensure candidates and MA TESOL Candidates.

Dr. Sehlaoui has initiated and supervised the establishment of the Arabic Language and Culture Program at ESU. He also wrote the proposal of a Master's of Arts program in TESOL, which was approved by the Kansas Board of Regents and started in Fall 2006. The MA TESOL is a unique program of its kind within the state of Kansas.

Dr. Sehlaoui is sponsor of the Arabic Club and ESU's MSA student organizations, member of the Graduate Council and Council on Teacher Education. He is currently a member of many other national and international professional organizations. 

Dr. Sehlaoui has been teaching since 1986 (in Secondary and Elementary Schools), and at the University level since 1995 in various contexts. He wrote and is currently directing various National Professional Development Grant projects ( $4.5 Million Dollars). The most recent grant project awarded is Project Estrellas ($1.4 Million Dollars). These grant projects serve more than 25 school districts. His rich ESL/EFL teaching experience, TESOL Teacher Education, and Computer Technology, Master degrees (in TEFL and TESOL) and Doctorate in TESOL Teacher Education have provided him with knowledge and skills in the following areas: Applied Linguistics; ESOL/Bilingual teacher education; second language acquisition; cross-cultural communication; TESL/TEFL methodology; integrated and content-based learner-centered curriculum and assessment; and computer-assisted language learning and teaching. 

Dr. Sehlaoui's research interest is in the areas of developing cross-cultural communicative competence in ESL/EFL teachers, CALL, TESOL Teacher Education Program Evaluation/Effectiveness and Professional Development, and Sociolinguistics. He speaks five languages (Arabic, French, English, Berber, and Spanish). He is married and has three children (two sons and one daughter).  He enjoys reading/writing, sport (martial arts), fishing, and drawing.
