Mission Statement
Emporia State University's Memorial Union is the community center of
the university, for students, faculty, administration, alumni and guests.
The Union is a vital part of the educational and social life of the university.
As the center of the university community, it serves as a unifying force
cultivating enduring regard for loyalty to the university.
History
"They Counted Not the Cost"
The Memorial Union Celebrates over 80 years of service. Our student
union was erected as a memorial to the students who died in WWI; therefore
the name - "Memorial Student Union" - was established. It was
the first student union building west of the Mississippi River. It
has undergone four building additions since its opening in 1925. The
three-level structure contains 168,000 square feet of space devoted
to conference, dining, meeting, recreational, and lounge facilities.
Board of Directors
The Assistant Vice President for Strategic Partnerships and Student Life serves as the President of
the Memorial Union Board of Directors and conducts the board meetings.
The Board consists of faculty, students, and administrators, some
of which fill designated positions. The board meets four times each
year.
Administration
The Memorial Union is a not-for-profit corporation governed by
a Board of Directors and managed by the Memorial Union Director, senior
employee of the corporation, and his staff. The Memorial Union Director
has 1 associate directors and 4 assistant directors reporting to him.
These management positions are supported by 16 full-time staff and
up to 40 student employees. The Memorial Union is the single-largest
employer of students on the ESU campus.
