Date:

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

Time:

8:30 - 12:30

Location:

The turn off of US Hwy 75 is less than 1 mile north of New Strawn (66839) ?? The Eisenhower Training Center is less than a mile east of Highway 75. You can see it from the east-bound road headed to the plant; if you look to the right (i.e., south) you will see it; it is the only building on this east-bound road that looks like people might be there. If you have problems with directions call me 620-757-0015 or Tammy at Wolf Creek because cell phone service can be a challenge 620-364-4078.

Focus:

Economics and Energy Resources The Environment Regulation Safety Regulation

Featuring:

Tammy Hughes, Warren Wood, and many others at Wolf Creek

Suggestions:

Most teachers will drive or car pool; however, anyone who wishes to ride with me in my car should call me 620-757-0015 (cell). I plan to leave Emporia between 7:45 and 7:50. We will visit areas few others ever see. We will be both hot and cool since we will visit the turbine deck and other areas.

Special Requirements:

Due to new Nuclear Regulatory rules we are limited to 15 participants and they cannot have more than one set per week in the plant. Priority is given to teachers who are taking five credit hours and then by scholarship request date. Pre-visit information including your Social Security number and special attire the day of the visit is required; this is critically important. They do background checks on each of us and take safety seriously. We must submitted your full name, social security number, current residence (city and state), and US citizenship (Y or N) a couple of weeks in advance. The special attire includes "substantial" shoes (e.g., no flimsy canvas shoes), no open toe or heal (e.g., no sandals), and no polyester or poly-blend clothes should be worn. No shorts are allowed. This is a precaution since we are planning to see the spent fuel pool. Ask Rob about having to leave his wool slacks behind after picking up some minute amounts of background radon gas in the environment somewhere. Their equipment is that sensitive. I honestly thought they wanted us to wear natural fiber clothing; instead, we want to avoid static electricity.
