| INTRODUCTION
TO THE ART AND CULTURE OF JAPAN |
This
course provides a basic introduction
to various topics related to the art
and culture of Japan. These include,
but are not limited to, The Early
Culture and Its Art, The
Rice Culture: Foundation for Harmony,
Religious Traditions, Art, and
Architecture, The Way of
Tea and the Tea Ceremony, Japanese
Aesthetics: Nature and Spirit,
Ukiyoe Prints and Daily Life,
The Influence of Japanese Art
and Aesthetics on the Western World,
Japanese Film, Manga, and Anime,
The National Treasures of Japan,
and Iro Iro (Many things): Education,
Rank, Manners, and Roles, etc.
Class instruction includes readings
and online research, discussions, and
various written assignments and internet
activities related to class topics.
Evaluation is based on participation,
discussions, written assignments, internet
activities, and examinations.
Concurrent Enrollment with either
AR 500 ZB/XB, Japan Project (1 hour)
or AR 500 ZC/XC Japan Study Tour (1

PROJECTS |
Students
will complete an extensive research
project on a selected topic related
to the art and culture of Japan. Projects
will be presented online for other class
members. They may be written or presented
in a Power Point or other similar format.

| JAPAN
STUDY TOUR |
Students
will travel to Japan for a 9-day tour
of Takasaki (Gunma Prefecture), Takayama,
Hiroshima, Kyoto, and Mt. Fuji. Before
departure, students will prepare a written
presentation on a topic associated with
this tour and submit it for grading.
They will also give a brief talk about
this topic to the students participating
in the tour when we visit the area or
attraction associated with the presentation.
Students are also required to keep a
journal of their experiences and reflections
and to submit it, or a copy of it, upon
returning to the United States. Additionally,
each student taking this tour is encouraged
to present his/her experience to a community
or non-profit group after returning
to the United States.

Note: An additional enrollment
fee of $2900 (plus tuition) for this
section includes round-trip airfare
between Kansas City International Airport
and Narita Japan, July 18 July
27, 2005, as well as all ground transportation,
hotels, and entrance fees to museums
and cultural attractions. Some meals
(approximately 1 per day), usually breakfast,
are included, but not all. Two non-refundable
deposits of $600.00 each are due on
March 18, 2005 and April 15, 2005. A
final payment of $1700 is due on May
31, 2005. Please make the checks for
these travel payments to ESU Art
Department and mail to Japan

EXPERIENCE |
Students
enrolled this section are mainly seeking
the travel experience and are not required
to take AR500 ZA or XA. To receive the
1-hour credit, the student must keep
a journal or his/her experiences and
reflections during the tour. The journal
will also include information from the
presentations by the instructor or other
students in the class. The journal (or
a copy of it) will be turned in to the
instructor for a grade. Students enrolled
in this section are encouraged to present
their experiences to community or non-profit
groups upon their return to the United
States.

| General Tour Information: |
After
flying from Kansas City to Narita, Japan, we will take
a bus to Takasaki City, where we will stay overnight.
The second day begins with a bus tour of Takasaki's attractions,
including the Museum of Modern Art. Before returning to
the hotel, we will visit Souzou University, where we will
enjoy an evening of moon viewing, at the reflecting pond
in the Japanese gardens.
The next morning we will travel to Takayama, a delightful
city in the Japanese Alps.
During
our two-day stay in Takayama, we will visit a morning
market, a contemporary shrine, the famous Takayama Festival
Floats, the Hida Folk Village, the Hida Art Museum and
the Hikaru Memorial Museum, where we will eat lunch and
view the exhibits.
There
will be time for shopping in "Old Town" and
a chance to fill your camera with images and your journals
with sketches and notes of your Japan experiences. Two
days in Takayama and you'll want to stay forever, but
it's on to our next stop, the historic city of Hiroshima.
In Hiroshima, we will visit the Peace Memorial Museum
and Peace Sculpture Park and other attractions.
Our
next stop, Kyoto, is famous as a center for the arts,
traditional crafts and culture. No tour of Japan would
be complete without exploring the museums, temples, gardens,
and sales galleries in this peaceful city.
Our final destination before departing for home will be
Mt. Fuji. We will travel to the fifth station by bus.
The cost for the Japan Study Tour or the Japan Experience
is $2900, plus tuition. Round-trip airfare, hotels, ground
transportation, admittance to local attractions, and some
meals is included.
Tour
cost deposits and final payment schedule:
March 18, 2005 $ 600 non-refundable deposit
April 15, 2005 $ 600 non-refundable deposit
May 31, 2005 $1700 final payment
U.S. Citizens must have a passport, valid through July
31, 2005. No visa is required. No immunizations required.
Resident Aliens, Green card holders, etc. - Please check
with the Japanese Consulate in Kansas City to see what
visa requirements are for the native country (your passport
country).
