Emporia State University possesses ten historically significant astronomical prints from an original portfolio of 15 produced by the French immigrant Étienne Lêopold Trouvelot (1827-1895). At a time when astrophotography was in its developmental stages, Trouvelot created over 7,000 drawings using naked-eye and telescopic observations between 1870 and 1881. From these drawings, 15 were selected to be recreated as chromolithographs for a portfolio produced and published in 1881 by Charles Scribner’s Sons. Each of the prints depicts a different astronomical object or phenomenon, and was intended by Trouvelot for serious astronomical studies and to reach a larger public audience (E. Fitch and Dr. Backhus).
Two of the prints and the research posters by Elizabeth Fitch and Dr. Backhus are currently displayed at WAW Library, 2nd floor.
