Kellogg Online Catalog
Our online catalog is used to locate items owned in physical or virtual formats by White Library. The catalog can be searched directly at the Libraries and Archives Web site at http://library.emporia.edu You can also click on Library Catalog at this site to do an advanced search.
Use Author or Title to search if you are looking for a specific item, and Periodical Title if you are looking for a specific magazine, journal, or newspaper.
For more comprehensive searching, try a “Keyword” or “Advanced Keyword Search” and combine terms as follows:
information literacy AND (college OR high school)
library administration AND management
reference AND public libraries NOT academic libraries
Course Reserves
For many of your SLIM courses, articles and other supplemental readings will be available as “electronic reserves”. At http://library.emporia.edu, click on Course Reserves. Search either by the last name of your SLIM professor or by the SLIM course name or number.
You will see links to the scanned articles in PDF format. When you click on the link for an article, you will see a prompt to enter your first and last name, your University ID, and a PIN. Your University ID can be your nine-digit number that begins with zeros or your new ID that begins with E. (You will see the same prompt for this information when you access electronic resources remotely.)
Your library PIN is one that you create. It can be created at this point, or through My Library Account. It needs to be six characters or more, and a combination of letters and numbers for security.
Since the articles are scanned in PDF format, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to retrieve them. Go to http://www.adobe.com/products/reader to download the latest version if needed.
You can read the articles online, download them to your computer, or print them.
Electronic Resources
Much of your research for SLIM courses will take place in electronic resources (databases and electronic journals) other than the online catalog. The distinction is that the online catalog is used to verify ownership of an item (book, periodical, media, etc.) or those items about a particular topic. Electronic resources are used primarily to locate articles about topics for your courses. Remote access to electronic resources is the same procedure for electronic reserves. When you click on a resource, you will be asked to enter your first and last name, University ID, and the library PIN you create for yourself.
Since library and information science is interdisciplinary, you will probably use a variety of subject-specific resources throughout your SLIM curriculum. Here is a basic list of electronic resources for a start.
These resources are found at http://library.emporia.edu by clicking on the E-Resources link. Go to Databases A-Z if you know the name of a specific database, and to Databases by Subject if you want to know about databases organized by topic:
