What is the Online Search Service?
The William Allen White Library provides customized searching of computerized databases. Through Dialog, the library has access to over 400 databases, covering a variety of subjects. The databases have access to journals, books, conference papers, reports, government documents and other sources. Most have a printed counterpart and the online files are usually updated more frequently. Some databases do not have a printed counterpart and online searching is their only access.
Why do an Online Search?
Computerized searching is faster and has the ability to search for more than one concept at a time. Searching may not only be accomplished by using author or subjcet headings, but material may also be located through other means such as the corporate source, publication year, journal title, language and by looking at key words in both citations and abstracts. It is also more comprehensive as it will look through multiple files and years at one time.Who may request an Online Search?
The service is designed to meet the information needs of the university's students, faculty and staff in that order of priority. Since the library utilizes the computerized literature searching to supplement its own collection, costs will vary according to agreements made, database searched and the status of the patron. For the majority of the databases searched the library will operate on a cost-recovery basis. This means that the patron will be responsible for all charges accrued during the search, plus an additional service charge, which will vary according to patron type. The additional charge is as follows:Emporia State Faculty and Staff $4.00

As a result of budgetary constraints, the library's subscriptions to the following titles were cancelled: Biological Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts, Historical Abstracts, and Physics Abstracts. At the time of the cancellation, an agreement was made to search their online counterparts free of charge for Emporia State University users affiliated with those departments affected by the cancellations, so as not to compromise future service. How do I request an Online Search?
