Interlibrary Loan FAQs

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan is a cooperative arrangement among libraries by which one library may borrow materials from another.

Who may borrow through Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan services are available to to any currently enrolled student, faculty, or staff, as well as Kansas Resident Card holders.

What may not be borrowed?

Ordinarily, libraries will not lend the following kinds of materials:

  • Reference books and rare books
  • New books
  • Complete issues of periodicals
  • Dissertations in manuscript form
  • Nonprint materials (videos, films, records, CDs, tapes)

We will not request the following:

  • Books assigned to an entire class
  • Duplicate of titles owned by the WAW Library unless long overdue or missing

How do I make requests?

To request material through Interlibrary Loan, you should:

1. Check ESU's Kellogg catalog for books or periodicals to determine whether they are owned by William Allen White.

2. Obtain request cards from any department in the library and fill out one for each item (blue for books, government documents, dissertations; green for periodicals). Fill out the cards completely and return to the Interlibrary Loan Office, or

3. Use the online request forms (see link provided at left)

4. Specify how you want to be notified of received materials (phone, mail, or e-mail).

Where do I pick up and return materials?

Interlibrary Loan materials can be picked up and returned at the Circulation desk in the lobby or at the Interlibrary Loan Office.

How long does it take to get materials?

Total processing time is usually 7-10 days from the date of the request until received at WAW Library. Articles may arrive sooner if they are transmitted electronically. The loan period is determined by the lending library. Generally, the loan period is two to four weeks.

How do I renew materials?

You should request a renewal through the Interlibrary Loan Office at least four days prior to the due date.

How much does it cost?

We try to obtain material from lenders that will not charge us. However, materials are occasionally available from libraries that charge a lending or photocopy fee. Those fees can start at $10 dollars per request. We must pass these charges on to you, the borrower. If you are not willing to pay the lending charges, we will be unable to process the requests. You will be responsible for items you lose or damage, as well as any charges for materials you do not pick up.

How much are fines for overdue materials?

Lates fees for Interlibrary Loan materials are $1.00 per day per item.

The electronic delivery of materials?

With advances in technology some materials obtained through Interlibrary Loan are transmitted electronically. These are then delivered electronically through a web server to the individual requesting the material. The requesting individual will receive an email notification with instructions for retrieving the articles.
