Purpose and Procedures of LA&S Dean’s Advisory Committee

PURPOSE:
In representing the LA&S faculty the LA&S dean’s advisory committee fulfills three major roles.

I. The committee facilitates two-way communication between faculty and the dean. The committee expresses faculty concerns to the dean and obtains information for the faculty from the dean.

II. The advisory committee, led by the moderator of the LA&S assembly, is responsible for drafting policies for the college such as the LA&S mission statement, and for scheduling LA&S assemblies, elections, awards ceremonies, and events. The committee also advises the dean in an informal capacity about LA&S policies and decisions.

III. When called upon by the dean, the committee reads and discusses with the dean personnel materials such as those submitted for sabbatical requests, retention, promotion, and tenure, and awards in teaching, service, and scholarship. The committee represents a faculty perspective to the dean, but it is never the role of the committee to make any formal recommendation on personnel matters.

COMPOSITION:
The LA&S dean’s advisory committee is comprised of the moderator of the LA&S assembly, the past moderator, the secretary, and three members at large.

All members of the committee must be tenure-line faculty in LA&S and able to serve the full year. The moderator must be able to serve two years.

Active terms for the current committee begin in August of the academic year and run to May.

The moderator is responsible for calling to order and addressing the assembly. The term of service for the moderator is one year as moderator, and a second year as past moderator.

The past moderator is responsible for insuring continuity of procedures within the advisory committee from one year to the next.

The secretary is responsible for collecting, drafting and disseminating information. The term of service for the secretary is one year.

The three members at large serve with the moderator, past moderator, and secretary as the advisory committee to the dean. The term of service for members at large is one year.

ELECTION:
The Moderator, the Secretary, and the three members-at-large on the Advisory Committee shall be elected by the membership of the Assembly at the final meeting of the year. The Secretary shall gather suggestions for candidates from the LA&S faculty and shall ensure that each nominee has agreed to serve. The current Advisory Committee shall then present a slate of nominees for offices indicated. In preparing the slate, the Advisory Committee shall consider the advisability of some degree of continuity in the membership of the Advisory Committee, and shall consider representations of disciplinary interest, academic ranks, and other diversity in the faculty. No faculty member serving as a department chair or as associate dean shall be eligible for election. No more than two faculty members from any department may serve. Additional nominations may be made from the floor at the final meeting of the year.
