Teaching Award Guidelines for Nomination and Selection
Nomination
All full-time faculty of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences are eligible for nomination. Nominations are solicited from faculty and division chairs each year during the spring semester.
Selection
After the stated nomination period has passed, the Dean chooses the recipient(s) of the LA&S Teaching Award with the assistance of the Dean’s Advisory Committee. The following characteristics of outstanding faculty are used as criteria for making this award.
1) Faculty who have demonstrated consistent teaching excellence over a period of time.
2) Faculty who demonstrate exceptional knowledge of the subject matter they teach and the ability to communicate that subject matter in a meaningful way.
3) Faculty who demonstrate an active concern for their students’ success and set a high
standard for these students to achieve.
4) Faculty who are available outside of class to deal with student needs and concerns.
5) Faculty who develop and/or use innovative teaching strategies that have proven positive results.
6) Faculty who become professional mentors and positive role models for their students.
7) Faculty who rise above the average ESU faculty member in their dedication, effort, and
positive impact on the intellectual development of our students.
Scholarship Award Guidelines for Nomination and Selection
Nomination
All full-time faculty of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences are eligible for nomination. Nominations are solicited from faculty and division chairs each year during the spring semester.
Selection
After the stated nomination period has passed, the Dean chooses the recipient(s) of the LA&S Scholarship Award with the assistance of the Dean’s Advisory Committee. The following characteristics of outstanding scholarly activity by faculty are used as criteria for making this award.
1) Faculty who have demonstrated consistent scholarly activity over a period of time.
2) Faculty who have successfully disseminated their scholarship efforts through appropriate venues.
3) Faculty who have gained recognition by their peers for the quality of their artistic performances and exhibitions.
4) Faculty who have successfully secured external funding or support for quality projects.
Service Award Guidelines for Nomination and Selection
Nomination
All full-time faculty of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are eligible for nomination. Nominations are solicited from the faculty and from division chairs each year near the beginning of the spring semester.
Selection
After the stated nomination period has passed, the Dean chooses the recipient(s) with the assistance of the LA&S Advisory Committee. The following criteria are used in the selection process.
1) Service to the division. This may include but is not limited to serving on the committees or other working groups, recruiting students, or the performance of administrative tasks of various types, fund raising for scholarships, events or programs within the division.
2) Service to the college. Meritorious contributions in college-wide activities and tasks such as committees, task forces, development of interdisciplinary programs and events, fund raising for college-wide programs.
3) Service to the university. Meritorious contributions in university-wide activities and tasks; committee work at the university level. Representing the university to government agencies or professional organizations, especially activities which rely on the faculty member’s professional expertise.
4) Service to the profession. Meritorious contributions in professional service activities at state, regional, national and/or international levels.
5) Service to the community. Community service in which the faculty member represents the university, or activities which reflect favorably on the university will be considered.
