Jim Roach, Moderator, brought the meeting to order and established a quorum. Roach then shared opening remarks regarding similar challenges when working with students entering college this year and a 1986 vehicle.

Minutes of the May 12, 2004, LA&S Assembly meeting were approved as circulated (moved by Amy Sage Webb, seconded by Elizabeth Locey).

Jim Roach, Moderator, thanked faculty for submitting a number of names to be placed on the ballot for the Vice President of Academic Affairs’ Advisory Committee. In accordance with the procedure, the current LA&S Dean’s Advisory Committee compiled a ballot. The ballots were distributed and Roach asked for nominations from the floor. Members elected to the Vice President’s Advisory Committee are: Virginia Higgins, Communication/Theater & the Arts; Amy Sage Webb, Humanities and Social Sciences; and Marvin Harrell, Natural Sciences and Nursing. Alternates are Andrea Piper, Ron McCoy, and Mary Mitsui, respectively.

John Schwenn, Vice-President, Academic Affairs, presented remarks to the Assembly. Vice-President Schwenn, after acknowledging ESU’s Mission Statement, Positioning Statement, Vision, and Values Commitment, discussed the Performance Agreement Goals established with the Kansas Board of Regents. New funding for the University is tied to demonstrating good progress toward meeting these goals. The Performance Agreement Goals are:
1. Expand the elementary teacher education completion program with Kansas City, Kansas Community College to help meet the needs of school districts in the Kansas City Metro area.
2. Increase the number of students graduating with a Bachelor’s degree who have participated in one or more out-of-classroom supervised educational experiences.
3. Provide access to or awareness of higher education for students from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
4. Implement an improved University information system and develop a plan to replace the current legacy system.
Vice-President Schwenn presented data regarding characteristics of future students and discussed challenges and opportunities facing faculty in the future. He ended his remarks with answering a number of questions.

The Moderator, Jim Roach, asked for remarks for the Good of the Order. Amy Sage Webb requested that the Dean’s Advisory Committee review the procedure/policy for membership on the Committee when the immediate past LA&S Moderator is not able to serve as an Advisory Committee member. The Dean’s Advisory Committee will address this at their next meeting and will bring the issue back to the next Assembly meeting.
