Minutes for May 12, 2004

Sally Turner, Moderator, began the meeting with general announcements including the academic year’s activities of the Dean’s Advisory Committee.

Sally Turner, Moderator, explained the duties of the moderator and secretary and asked nominees for moderator and secretary for next year’s Dean’s Advisory Committee to introduce themselves. She also asked for nominations from the floor. Jim Roach (Physical Sciences) was elected Moderator, and Jean DeDonder, (Nursing) was elected Secretary.

Minutes of the January 28 and April 2, 2004 LA&S Assembly meetings were approved as circulated (1/28 moved by Ginny Higgins; seconded by Kenna Reeves – 4/2 moved by Marvin Harrell; seconded by Rachelle Smith).

Turner presented for a vote the “Vice President’s Advisory Council Election Process” draft which had been discussed at two earlier LA&S Assembly meetings. Harrell moved for acceptance of the motion, and R. Smith seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Turner asked nominees for members-at-large for the Dean’s Advisory Committee to introduce themselves. She also asked for nominations from the floor. Elected as members-at-large were Mike Keck (Physical Sciences), Greg Schneider (Social Sciences), and Betsy Yanik (Mathematics and Computer Science).

Associate Dean Gary Bleeker explained that Dean Rod Sobieski was still engaged in jury duty. He thanked the LA&S faculty for their hard work and accomplishments during the NCATE and HLC accreditation process. Bleeker acknowledged LA&S chairs for their service and Sandy Browning for her efforts this year. He also presented the annual awards for Service, Scholarship, and Teaching in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. In addition to a plaque, Dewayne Backhus (Physical Sciences) received a $500 award for excellence in service, Gary Holcomb (English) received a $500 award for excellence in scholarship, and Ed McGlone (Communication & Theatre) received a $1000 award for excellence in teaching.

Bleeker also acknowledged this year’s LA&S faculty retirees who were Jeff Bair (Sociology & Anthropology), Charles Greenlief (Physical Sciences), Don Johnson (Art-not present), Ken Johnson (Physical Sciences), John Lehman (Communication & Theatre), John Somer (English), and James Swain (Music).

The meeting adjourned at approximately 4:30.
