Knowing the external morphology is vital to identifying species and understanding why the flies are wingless. Symbols: as--anal segment, h--haltere, mxp--maxillary palp, pls--pleural suture, pn--pronotum, sc--scpe of antennae, sp--spiracle (a breathing hole), s--sternum (plates on belly of abdomen), t--tergum (plates on back of abdomen), w--wing rudiment. The long legs (shown on the cover) are not included in these drawings.
