JIEE Programs

At any one time, the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence has a number of programs operating to encourage people thinking about becoming teachers or supporting veteran teachers. Besides workshops and conferences offering professional development, JIEE houses the following programs.

Center for Innovative School Leadership wordmark

The Center for Innovative School Leadership (CISL) conducts efficiency reviews of individual school districts, helping them realize greater efficiencies and identifying good practices that can be shared with other school districts. This will allow districts to put savings back into the classroom for a greater investment in our children. The center is a cooperative endeavor of Emporia State University, Pittsburg State University and Fort Hays State University.

Great Plains Center for National Teacher Certification

Great Plains Center for National Teacher Certification logoThe Great Plains Center for National Teacher Certification in the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence at Emporia State University offers a program of professional development at no cost for teachers in Kansas going through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) assessment process.

 

Jones Distinguished Lecture Series

Established in 1986, the Jones Distinguished Lecture Series brings to the campus of Emporia State University nationally recognized leaders in education. While on campus, the Jones Lecturers meet with small groups, visit classes, conduct open forums, and deliver a formal address that is open to the public. Jones Distinguished Professor Program

The Jones Distinguished University Professor Program provides a unique opportunity for a nationally respected scholar to spend a semester or more at Emporia State University. While in residence, the distinguished professor is required to do a policy study of a pertinent issue in education. Through teaching, writing, research, and consulting, the Jones Professor provides leadership in areas of interest to educators across the state and region.

Kansas Future Teacher Academy

The Kansas Future Teacher Academy has graduated more than 1,000 of Kansas' brightest high school juniors and seniors over 20 summers. Since 1989, when the first academy had the honor of receiving the AASCU Christa McAuliffe Showcase for Excellence Award, the Future Teacher Academy at ESU has provided select students with the opportunity to learn more about the challenges and rewards of teaching and has become recognized as an established and highly respected training opportunity for students throughout the state of Kansas.

Kansas Migrant and English Language Learner Academy (KMEA Academy)

The mission of the Kansas Migrant and English Language Learner Academy is to provide research-based professional development for educators who would benefit from additional training to ensure success for Kansas's diverse K-12 migrant and English language learning population.

To assist educators, videos are available about a variety of cultures students in Kansas come from. These are avialable from the link on the right, "Culture & Immigrant Mini-Documentaries."


KMEA was a partnership between Emporia State University and the University of Kansas from 2009 to 2012. At ESU, it was housed in the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence.

Kansas Regional Reading Recovery University Training Center

Reading Recovery® LogoReading Recovery® is a short-term, early intervention literacy program designed for young readers who are at risk of failing to read and write. The goal of the program is to enable the lowest achieving learner to make accelerated progress, catch up with grade-level peers, and profit from regular classroom instruction. Emporia State University was approved as the 23rd Reading Recovery® Regional Training Center in North America in the spring of 1998.
