The average school year is 180 student contact days. In grade four, the Kansas math Standards include 204 indicators. YOU DO THE MATH!! IT’S TOO MUCH!!!

If we want all staff to participate and have a voice in the process of setting curriculum, we must rethink the process of curriculum development.

Many schools across the state are using the Bullseye Curriculum Model developed by the Auburn-Washburn team to identify and prioritize the Kansas curricular standards to local curriculum. This model helps teachers and administrators understand the indicators, align the curriculum and plan assessment all at the same time. This process is doable, so enter the Bullseye for deep alignment to the indicators and success in reaching AYP.

Kim Rasmussen and Sherry Reed are K-12 Curriculum Coordinators for the USD 437 Auburn Washburn Public Schools. Kim served for eight years as social studies consultant at KSDE, facilitating development of state standards and assessments.
