Bachelor of Science Degree Program in Recreation

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation offered by the Department of HPER at Emporia State University is designed to prepare students for leadership roles in the area of recreation.  Graduates learn to assess constituents, and to design, implement and evaluate programs to affect leisure choices of participants associated with various public and private agencies and institutions at local, state, national, and international levels.

The Recreation curriculum centers on preparing critical thinkers, creative planners, and effective practitioners for careers in the recreation field.  The National Recreation and Park Association/American Association for Leisure and Recreation accreditation guidelines are used as guides for the recreation program.  Employment opportunities exist in public, private, corporate, medical, non-profit, academic, and commercial recreation settings.

Recreation Program Course Sequence

 Student Outcomes

  1. Use diverse community, institutional, natural, cultural, and human services to promote and enhance leisure experiences.
  2. Produce, interpret and synthesize written information/data, oral communication, multimedia presentations to effectively communicate with various professional constituents and groups.
  3. Plan, organize and assess a variety of leisure programming and special events in diverse settings and/or for diverse populations.
  4. Use sound managerial, marketing, and financial processes in the administration and management of leisure services.
  5. Understand and use legal concepts and legislative processes, as these apply to leisure services, including implementation of risk management plans.
  6. Impart and promote the benefits of leisure to various constituents and groups based on a sound understanding of concepts, principles and theories of leisure studies.
  7. Demonstrates professional growth, professional judgment and ethical behavior in professional settings. 

Admission Requirements for Recreation Students

  1. Prospective Recreation Majors must meet all University requirements and be admitted to Emporia State University.
  2. Prospective Recreation Majors must complete an application for admission to the Recreation Program after they have completed the first eleven hours of the recreation core classes with a C or better (Recreation Application).
  3. This application must be accompanied by Major’s Agreement Form, which must be signed and dated (Major's Agreement Form).
  4. Prospective Recreation Majors must have an Overall GPA of 2.5 and a 2.75 GPA in the first nine recreation core hours. 
  5. If a student does not meet the above criteria, the student may petition to be placed on probation for one semester and may re-apply at the end of that semester to be removed from probation. 
  6. If the student does not meet the above criteria by the end of the probationary semester, the student will not be admitted to the Recreation Program. 
  7. Any student who has committed a felony will not be admitted to the Recreation Program.  

Application Deadlines

  1. Complete the Application Form and Major's Agreement Form.
  2. Application for admission into the Recreation Program must be received by October 1st for Spring acceptance and March 1st for Fall acceptance. 

Retention Policy

  1. Once a student is admitted to the Recreation Program, s/he must complete the following requirements in order to complete the Recreation Program and graduate from Emporia State University with a BS degree in Recreation.
  2. The Recreation major must complete 124 credit hours with a minimum of 45 credit hours at the 300 level or higher.
  3. The Recreation major must maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 and a GPA of 2.75 in all Recreation Program core classes. 
  4. The Recreation major must pass three major program assessments at the acceptable level.  These assessments and minimal acceptable level are listed below.
    • Practicum I Supervisor’s Evaluation
    • Portfolio Evaluation
    • Intern Supervisor’s Evaluation
  5. The Recreation major must complete each of the following courses in the Recreation Program with a C or better and have a 2.75 GPA in all recreation classes to complete the program and to be eligible to enroll in RC 570 and RC 510.
