Health Promotion Program
Students in Health Promotion gain hands-on experience at local corporations.
The Bachelor of Science degree in Health Promotion offered by the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Emporia State University is designed to prepare students for positions in health promotion, public administration and related areas. Graduates are prepared to take leadership roles in designing, implementing and evaluating health promotion campaigns in various public and private agencies and institutions at local, state and national levels. The health promotion professionals trained in this program will possess the knowledge and skills to affect lifestyle choices and improve a person’s, community’s and/or organization’s health.
The Health Promotion Program is endorsed by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) via the University Connection Endorsement Program (UCEP). As an endorsed university, students in the Health Promotion program are eligible to sit for ACSM certification exams upon graduation. Employment opportunities exist in corporate, clinical/medical, not-for-profit organizations, commercial/private settings and academic institutions.
- Use a variety of skills, resources and tools to identify health/wellness needs of diverse populations.
- Use and integrate appropriate modes of communication, both written and spoken, and modes of technology into professional practice during the evaluation, implementation and assessment processes.
- Use sound managerial and financial processes for programming, scheduling, promotion and evaluation of effective health promotion initiatives for diverse populations.
- Demonstrate initiative and responsibility, as well as understand and use legal concepts and legislative processes, as these apply to health promotion, including adherence to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
- Demonstrate a sound understanding of concepts, principles and theories of health promotion by analyzing current research and resources within the professional discipline.
- Demonstrate professional behavior and professional growth and competency through attendance at conferences, membership in professional organizations and certifications from related agencies and organizations.
- Prospective Health Promotion Majors must meet all University requirements and be admitted to Emporia State University.
- Prospective Health Promotion Majors must complete an application for admission to the Health Promotion Program after they have completed the first eight hours of the Health Promotion core classes with a C or better (See Appendix A). This application must be accompanied by Major’s Agreement Form, which must be signed and dated (See Appendix B).
- Prospective Health Promotion Majors must have an Overall GPA of 2.5 and a 2.75 GPA in the first eleven health promotion core hours.
- If a student does not meet the above criteria, the student may petition to be placed on probation for one semester and may re-apply at the end of that semester to be removed from probation.
- If the student does not meet the above criteria by the end of the probationary semester, the student will not be admitted to the Health Promotion Program.
- Any student who has committed a felony will not be admitted to the Health Promotion Program.
- Complete the Application Form and Major's Agreement Form.
- Application for admission into the Health Promotion Program must be received by October 1st for Spring acceptance and March 1st for Fall acceptance.
Once a student is admitted to the Health Promotion Program, s/he must complete the following requirements in order to complete the Health Promotion Program and graduate from Emporia State University with a BS degree in Health Promotion.
- The Health Promotion major must complete 124 credit hours with a minimum of 45 credit hours at the 300 level or higher.
- The Health Promotion major must maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 and a GPA of 2.75 in all Health Promotion Program core classes.
- The Health Promotion major must pass three major program assessments at the acceptable level. These assessments and minimal acceptable level are listed below.
- Practicum I Supervisor’s Evaluation – a student must achieve 27 points or higher out of a possible 45 points on this assessment (See Appendix C).
- Portfolio Evaluation – a student must achieve 16 points or higher out of a possible 24 points on this assessment (See Appendix D).
- Intern Supervisor’s Evaluation – a student must achieve 75 points or higher out of a possible 125 points on this assessment (See Appendix E).
- The Health Promotion major must complete each of the following courses in the Health Promotion Program with a C or better and have a 2.75 GPA in all Health Promotion classes to complete the program and to be eligible to enroll in HL 580. These classes are:
- HL 344 Modifying Health Behavior
- HL 465 Worksite Wellness Programs
- HL 565 Strategies in HLP
- HL 566 Exercise Programming in HLP
- HL 570 Practicum
Probation and/or Dismissal
Once a student is admitted to the Health Promotion program, s/he can be placed on probation or dismissed from the Health Promotion Program if the following conditions occur:
- The student falls below a 2.5 Overall GPA and/or falls below a 2.75 GPA in the Health promotion Program classes.
- The first time the student’s GPA does not reach a 2.5 Overall and/or a 2.75 in the Health Promotion program classes, the student will be placed on probation for one semester.
- If the student does not raise his/her Overall GPA and/or Health Promotion Program GPA after that one semester, s/he will be dismissed from the Health Promotion Program and will not be able to continue in the program until the Overall GPA and/or the Health Promotion Program GPA has been raised to the appropriate level.
- The student is convicted of a felony while s/he is a Health Promotion Major.
- If the student is convicted of a felony during the time s/he is a student in the Health Promotion Program, s/he will be automatically dismissed from the Health Promotion Program.
- The student displays inappropriate dispositional characteristics or behaviors on a consistent basis. These dispositional characteristics and behaviors consist of, but are not limited to, use of inappropriate language in class, failure to arrive to class on time and/or to be absence from class on a regular basis, use of rude and inappropriate interactions with peers and faculty, failure to follow the academic dishonesty policy.
- If a student consistently displays inappropriate dispositional characteristics or behaviors, s/he may be removed from the Health Promotion Program.
