Shepherd Scholarships
A $150,000 gift by Emporians R. Hershel and Augusta Shepherd to Emporia State University established the ESU Shepherd Scholars program in 1995. The Shepherds then contributed an additional $100,000 to the fund, which will be used to honor up to 15 scholars each year.
To These New Criteria:
Eligible students will have maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 and shall (a) meet, at a minimum, the traditional definition of “Junior” classification by having completed at least 60 credit hours at the time of application, and (b) have at least two semesters’ worth of coursework remaining prior to degree attainment.
Each of the scholars receives a plaque and a $1000-award to recognize his or her achievements. In addition they are designated ESU Shepherd Scholars for their senior year.
To apply students must submit:
2) a sample of their best college work (research paper, essay, taped musical performance, art project, etc.)
3) a letter of application that summarizes their accomplishments, that includes a statement about the significance of their sample of college work, and that explains what this award would mean to them
4) transcripts of their college work (unofficial transcripts are fine, print outs from BuzzIn are acceptable if you have included your name on the printout)
5) at least two letters of recommendation from faculty or staff that must be submitted under separate cover.
In the MOA for the scholarship there is a slight preference for students who graduated from a high school in Lyon County or one of the counties that touch Lyon County. Students are encouraged to seek the advice of an advisor or other professor as they prepare their application materials.
