III. Old Business:

A. Members of the Modern Languages and Literatures’ Faculty presented and answered questions to the General Education Program—Issues discussed included (1) whether or not all students will be required to take a foreign language; (2) whether or not foreign language should remain in the “Multi Cultural” section of the general education program: (3) “ghosting” foreign language courses: (4)what constitutes “proficiency in a foreign language; and (5) whether or not, for example, all “Spanish” speaking “cultures” will be addressed in the Spanish courses.
B. G. of the 2005-2006 Graduating Senior Survey.
2. G. Bleeker reported that, rather than sending a letter to the chairs
who have submitted course proposals for the new general education program, he is visiting with the chairs, inviting them to submit to the council by December 1, changes for existing courses or proposals for new courses.
3. Council decided to have a subcommittee draft a proposal for a
framework for the revised general education program. The subcommittee will consist of Paul Bland, Christina Garton, Nancy Hite, and Gary Wyatt. G. Bleeker will convene the group before the October 25 meeting.
