General Education Council
September 27, 2006 @ 3:00 p.m.
KSTC Room

Minutes

PRESENT: Paul Bland, Barbara Bleeker, Gary Bleeker, Ashley Bohn, Malonne Davies, George Durler, Nicole Gannon, Christina Garton, Ellen Hansen, Neal Luo (proxy for Tony Ambrosio), and Gary Wyatt.
Guest: Dean Rodney Sobieski

I. Minutes of September 13, 2006 were approved.

II. Announcements:
G. Bleeker invited council members to attend the Assessment Forum Poster Session and Workshop on Thursday, September 28, from 1:00-5:00 in the Ballroom & Kanza room. He also announced that Dr. Steven Vogel from Duke University will present a lecture on “Power From the People: When Muscle Was Our Main Motor” on Wednesday, September 27, at 7:00 in SH72.

III. Old Business:
Dean Rod Sobieski spoke to council members about a number of “Transitions” taking place at ESU. One of those transitions is a change in the general education program. He encouraged the Council to use this semester to solicit some new courses and to think of different strategies for delivering general education courses, i.e., learning communities, smaller sections, interdisciplinary courses. He promised to lobby central administration for the resources necessary to support the best general education program we can design.

After much discussion, the Council agreed that G. Bleeker should draft a letter to Chairs, inviting them to submit a “concept” and brief description for a new course or courses by December 1.

Council agreed to the following timetable:
December 1: Chairs send “concept” for new course to Council
March 1: Council proposes a general education curriculum to Chairs
March 28: Chairs send feedback to Council
April 25: Council approves general education program

Neal Luo distributed a copy of Graduating Senior Survey on General Education (FY2004-2006)”

IV. New Business: None

The meeting adjourned at 4:40 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Gerrit Bleeker
Director of General Education
