Minutes

PRESENT:     Tony Ambrosio, Paul Bland, Barbara Bleeker, Gary Bleeker, Malonne Davies, Ed Emmer (proxy for Ellen Hansen), Nicole Gannon, Nancy Hite, Steve Neill, Dennis Schmitt, and Gary Wyatt.

  • Minutes of April 11, 2007 were approved.

  • Announcements:  None

  • New Business: 

  • Foreign Languages Proficiency Policy Proposal was presented by Elizabeth Locey and Dwight Moore.  Discussion ensued and the proposal was unanimously approved.

“To meet the Bachelor of Arts General Education Foreign Language requirement, students will demonstrate proficiency at the 111: Language and Culture II level. Proficiency will be demonstrated by successful completion of a Modern Languages and Literatures course numbered 111 or above, for a minimum of three and a maximum of 10 hours of language courses. International students and scholars may meet the language requirement upon successful completion of EG 102: Comp II. All other students whose native language is not taught on the Emporia State campus may meet this requirement by demonstrating proficiency in this language through a Department of Modern Languages-approved assessment instrument at the students’ expense, or by demonstrating proficiency at the 111 level of a language taught at Emporia State.”

  • Nancy Hite distributed information about a fairly new standardized general education assessment test—MAPP.

  • Old Business:

A.  Gary B. will request summer schedules and arrange for meetings in the summer to address, individually, departmental feedback about the proposed general education goals and program in preparation for the first Fall 2007 General Education Meeting.

B.   Gary B. thanked Nancy Hite and George Durler for their service on the general education council.  He also thanked Malonne Davies for her service as Chair of the General Education Council.

The meeting adjourned at 4:25 p.m.
