General Education Council
Summary of 2006-2007
August 3, 2007
Review 2005-2006 Graduating Senior Survey
The Council reviewed the general education components of the 2005-2006 graduating senior survey.
Receive Report of Mid-term Evaluations of GTAs Teaching General Education Courses
The Council reviewed and approved the report on mid-term evaluations for GTAs teaching general education courses for HPER, Biology, English, and Psychology.
Review Process for Evaluation of GTAs
The Council decided not to design a standardized assessment instrument for evaluating the performance of GTAs who teach general education classes but to keep the process the way it is.
Continue to Revise “Working Draft” of General Education Program Goals and Curriculum
Since very few new general education courses were proposed by departments for the revised general education program, the Council asked the Director of General Education to send a letter to Chairs, inviting them to submit a “concept” and a brief description for a new course or courses. Rather than send a letter, the Director visited with all departmental chairs, inviting them to submit to the Council changes for existing courses or proposals for new courses. Council approved a “working draft” of a framework for the revised general education program. The Council aligned the proposed courses for the revised general education program with the new goals and outcomes and then agreed to place those courses which met one or more of the goals into one of the categories of the proposed framework. “Working Draft” of the General Education Program was distributed to departments via Chairs for departmental review. The Director will convene one or more “working sessions” of Council members during the summer to address feedback from the several departments. The Council plans to have a revised general education program ready for Council Approval and Faculty Senates Review by early Fall 2007.
With the help of Anthony Ambrosio, the Council also discussed a process for developing a friendly and useful Assessment Plan for measuring General Education goals/outcomes.
Modify Competency Exam Requirements
The Council approved the following changes to the alternative ways to meet writing, mathematics, and reading competencies: (1) for “Writing,” delete “Earning a grade of ‘C’ or higher in any General Education Council approved ESU writing intensive course,” add “Earning a grade of ‘B’ or higher in EG 104 (Honors Composition II) or in EG 301 (Advanced Composition),” and add “Receiving credit by examination for EG 102”; (2) for “Mathematics,” change item # 3 to read: “Earning a grade of ‘C’ or higher in any approved general education math course beyond MA 110,” and add “Receiving credit by examination for either MA 110 or MA 161”; and (3) for “Reading,” change the last item to read: “Earning a B- or higher (or credit by examination) in each course used to meet the general education requirements.”
Approve Foreign Languages Policy Proposal
The Council approved the following proposal: “To meet the Bachelor of Arts General Education Foreign Language requirement, students will demonstrate proficiency at the 111: Language and Culture II level. Proficiency will be demonstrated by successful completion of a Modern Languages and Literatures course numbered 111 or above, for a minimum of three and a maximum of ten hours of language courses. International students and scholars may meet the language requirement upon successful completion of EG 102: Comp II. All other students whose native language is not taught on the Emporia State campus may meet this requirement by demonstrating proficiency in this language through a Department of Modern Languages-approved assessment instrument at the students’ expense, or by demonstrating proficiency at the 111 level of a language taught at Emporia State.”
Respectfully submitted,
Gerrit Bleeker
Director of General Education
