Minutes

PRESENT: Tony Ambrosio, Phil Bennett, Barbara Bleeker, Gary Bleeker, Malonne Davies, George Durler, Ellen Hansen, Nancy Hite, Steve Neill, Dennis Schmitt, Shervette Stevens, Amy Sage Webb

I. Minutes of April 12, 2006 Meeting: The minutes of the General Education Council meeting of April 12, 2006 were approved.

II. Announcements - None

III. New Business:

A. Catlett distributed “Perspectives from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Annual Meeting: Experiential Learning, General Education, and Assessment” for discussion.

B. G. Bleeker and Webb circulated information pertaining to alternatives to the CAAP Writing Exam. Ambrosio agreed to work with Neal Luo to conduct a correlation between CAAP writing scores (essay and objective test totals) and grades in each of the following courses: EG102, GO326, SP500, EG301. Over the summer, Ambrosio will have Brenda Nichols examine archived CAAP exemption forms to determine the frequency of each writing exemption option exercised by ESU students in the last calendar year (e.g., Aug 1 2005 to Aug 1 2006). They will also tally the frequency of students who used each of the above courses to fulfill the intensive writing course option. Issue was tabled for future discussion.

C. Unanimously agreed to accept Report on General Education MCI Course Evaluations.

D. Unanimously agreed to accept Reports on Midterm Evaluation of GTAs from Psychology and Biological Sciences. English and HPER have not yet submitted evaluation reports.
