                          General Education Council

                         February 27, 2008@ 3:00 p.m.

                                        PDK Room

                                           Minutes

PRESENT:     Tony Ambrosio, Paul Bland, Barbara Bleeker, Gary Bleeker, Ryann Brooks, Alexis Downs,  David Edds, Ellen Hansen, Kevin Johnson, Steve Neill, Jonathan Rivers, Dennis Schmitt, and Gary Wyatt.

Visitor: President Michael Lane

I.          President Lane shared his views on assessment for the General Education Program and answered questions from Council members.  He feels assessment of the General Education Program should be 2-pronged.  First, the assessment should  assess the set of skills rather than content and/or specific classes and second, there should be independent validation of the assessment.  He supports embedding assessment into general education classes as much as possible. There are numerous external measurement tools available: CAAP, CLA, etc.

He feels Regents will expect significant progress towards establishing an assessment procedure at ESU by Summer 2009.  General Education Council and TLAC should collaborate on determining a General Education Assessment procedure.  President Lane feels that the cost should be budgeted for so the students won’t have to bear the brunt of it.

II.         Old Business:

Wyatt read section V. Committee Reports from the DRAFT Minutes from the Faculty Senate Meeting held on February 19, 2008 regarding Faculty Senate’s vote on the proposed General Education Program.

G. Bleeker shared 2 emails from students, via ASG President Courtney George, concerning the proposed general Education Program.

G. Bleeker reported on the AAC&U conference which was attended by G. Bleeker, B. Bleeker, and Ambrosio on February 21-23, 2008 in Boston.

III.       Minutes of February 13, 2008 were approved.

The meeting adjourned at 4:13 p.m.

                                                    Respectfully submitted,

                                                     Gerrit Bleeker

                                                     Director of General Education
