                          General Education Council

                                                  January 24, 2007 @ 3:00 p.m.

                                                                 PDK Room

Minutes

PRESENT:     Tony Ambrosio, Paul Bland, Barbara Bleeker, Gary Bleeker,  Ashley Bohn, Malonne Davies, George Durler, Christina Garton, Ellen Hansen, Nancy Hite, Steve Neill, Dennis Schmitt and Gary Wyatt.

I.       Minutes of January 10, 2007 were approved.

II.       Announcements:

G. Bleeker reported that the rumor about ESU not accepting credit for College Algebra taken at a community college is a rumor.  He will visit with Lydel Landgren, Ambassadors’ sponsor Larry Scott, Chair in Math, and Dean Sobieski about this issue.

G. Bleeker also announced that the Department of Instructional Design & Technology (IDT) will not be sending forward a general education course proposal.

III.       Old Business:

After lengthy discussion, council members agreed to the following plan of action:

The chairs of the other two subcommittees will send to George as soon as possible a composite list of their subcommittee’s attempts to link the proposed courses assigned to their group with the outcomes.  George will collate the three lists on a spreadsheet and email the spreadsheet to G. Bleeker who will distribute this information to all council members.  Using this information as a guide, the three subcommittees will meet to decide which of the proposed courses will best fit under the two assigned sections of the general education framework generated earlier.

Subcommittee # 1—George, Ellen, Barbara, and Nicole--will select and propose the best course or courses to fit under categories I and II (Core Skills and Creative Arts).

Subcommittee # 2—Malonne, Dennis, Steve, and Ashley will select and propose the best course or courses to fit under categories III and IV ( Humanities and Natural Sciences).

Subcommittee # 3—Nancy, Paul, Gary, and Christina will select and propose the best courses or courses to fit under categories V and VI (Social and Behavioral Studies and Life Skills).

Each subcommittee will send its proposed choices of courses for the General Education Framework to G. Bleeker before February 14 so we can discuss them at our next scheduled meeting on that day.

IV.       New Business:  None

The meeting adjourned at 4:40 p.m.

                                                     Respectfully submitted,

                                                     Gerrit Bleeker

                                                     Director of General Education
