September is fast approaching, and with it comes the Emporia Main Street Great American Market. Saturday September 12th, from 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. vendors from throughout the Midwest will gather on Commercial Street to showcase an eclectic mix of merchandise, food and other fun treats. Shop unique booths, view classic cars, stop by the Emporia Art’s Council “Chalk Fest” and sample local cuisine in a fun “street fair” atmosphere.
The seventh installment of the Great American Market is expected to be one of Emporia Main Streets biggest events ever, and we encourage community members to participate! Chalk Fest
This annual event, sponsored by the Emporia Arts Council, will take place in conjunction with the Great American Market. The annual Chalk Fest is a street painting festival that is a community wide, multicultural celebration of the arts. It will be in the 900 Block of Commercial this year. Departments of Physical Sciences Open House
Physics Department, Ground Floor
In addition to a possible program in Peterson Planetarium, walk through the introductory physics laboratory, room 35, where computer-interfaced laboratory modules are set up.
GeoSpatial Analysis Computer Laboratory, Ground Floor, Room 16
The computers in this laboratory are used for computer mapping, to analyze satellite images of Earth, to do image-processing and to access the Internet for a variety of uses in earth science courses. This lab is used for instruction, or for student and faculty research projects supported by NASA or other agencies.
Peterson Planetarium, Ground Floor, Room 31
A state-of-the-art planetarium system was installed in Peterson Planetarium in 1997. A 15-minute program featuring objects visible in the current sky will be shown at 10:30, 11:00, and 11:30 am.
Johnston Geology Museum, First Floor, Room 106
Browse through to view fossil, rock, and mineral specimens, most of which were collected in Kansas. The internationally significant Hamilton Quarry fossils are the Museum centerpiece.
Earth Science Department, First Floor
In addition to walking through and observing displays in the Johnston Geology Museum, or the GeoSpatial Analysis Laboratory (ground floor), visit the Map Library in room 108.
Chemistry Department, Second Floor
Visit the remodeled chemistry laboratories including the Jones Environmental Chemistry Laboratory suite, rooms 226 and 227 (room 226 is a chemical instrumentation laboratory).
Pass, Catch, and Kick Contest
Practice Fields by the Student Recreation Center
10:30am - 12:30pm
Two-person teams (an ESU student and an immediate family member) can compete in the qualifying rounds beginning at 10:30am - 12:30pm. Sign up at the Practice Fields by the Student Recreation Center. The top three teams will compete at halftime of the ESU football game in Welch Stadium and receive free ESU T-Shirts! Grand Prize: A Family Day Game Pack from the MU Bookstore. Other prizes include $50 and $25 gift certificates to the MU Bookstore.
The Black Hole

Don’t forget your pre-game warm up! Bring your friends and family to the Black Hole before the Emporia State football game. Show your Hornet pride with ESU Athletics, E Zone, KISS 103.1, and ESU fans of all ages! The Black Hole is a fun and friendly tailgating experience, with music from KISS 103.1, free food, tons of free giveaways, and games for all ages.

Join us after the ESU Football game for a variety of international foods from around the world. Past menus have included entrees such as enchiladas, arroz con pollo, bulogi, huminta, teriyaki chicken and spring rolls. Desserts ranged from sopapillas, to crepes or German apple pie. Enjoy this colorful and cultural Festival of Food!
