Teenager Baby (Jennifer Grey), goes with her family on vacation to Kellerman’s holiday resort in the Catskills Mountains. Things are pretty tame until she meets Johnny (Patrick Swayze), a dance teacher at the resort who mesmerizes Baby with his dance moves, his passion and his misunderstood “bad boy” image. During that summer of 1963, Johnny teaches Baby how to dance, and more importantly how to love. Sponsored by Union Activities Council.

Great American Market

The 2008 Great American Market will be held in downtown Emporia on from 7am till 4pm. The market is an annual event featuring booth venders selling antiques, collectibles, vehicles, everything you can think of. This is an all day event with food, fun and music. This event is sponsored by Emporia Main Street and The Emporia Gazette.
Chalk Fest
This annual event, sponsored by the Emporia Arts Council, will take place in conjunction with the Great American Market. The annual Chalk Fest is a street painting festival that is a community wide, multicultural celebration of the arts. It will be in the 900 Block of Commercial this year. For more information about local art programs please contact the Arts Council at 343-6473.
Car Show
Held in conjunction with the Great American Flea Market 9am till 4pm in the 1000 and 1100 Blocks of Commercial. Open to all cars, trucks, motorcycles, and special interest vehicles. $10 entry fee day of event.
Fun Run

This Family Day ESU will be hosting a 5K Fun Run/Walk. This will be an opportunity for families to tour the campus and help the American Red Cross. The registration fee of $10 per participant (ESU students and children 10 and under are $5) will go towards assisting Kansas families whose homes were recently devastated by the recent storms. You will receive a t-shirt when you register online by August 22, 2008. Although this is not a competition there will be prizes for the winners. Sponsored by Union Activities Council and Community Hornets.

Welcome to ESU, the Departments of Physical Sciences (the chemistry, earth science and physics departments), and the Johnston Geology Museum and Peterson Planetarium. You will have the opportunity to observe the more-visible and behind-the-scenes activities associated with instruction and research in the physical sciences.
While you are with us in the Cram Science Hall wing of the science hall complex, consider the following:
Physics Department, Ground Floor
In addition to a possible program in Peterson Planetarium, walk through the introductory physics laboratory, room 35, where computer-interfaced laboratory modules are set up.
GeoSpatial Analysis Computer Laboratory, Ground Floor, Room 16
The computers in this laboratory are used for computer mapping analyzing satellite images of Earth, and accessing the Internet for a variety of uses in earth science courses. This lab is used for instruction, or for student and faculty research projects supported by NASA or other agencies.
Peterson Planetarium, Ground Floor, Room 31
A state-of-the-art planetarium system was installed in Peterson Planetarium in 1997. A 15-minute program featuring objects visible in the current sky will be shown at 10:30, 11 and 11:30am.
Johnston Geology Museum, First Floor, Room 106
Browse through to view fossil, rock, and mineral specimens, most of which were collected in Kansas. The internationally significant Hamilton Quarry fossils are the museum centerpiece.
Earth Science Department, First Floor
In addition to walking through and observing displays in the Johnston Geology Museum, or the GeoSpatial Analysis Laboratory (ground floor), visit the Map Library in room 108.
Chemistry Department, Second Floor
Visit the chemistry laboratories including the Jones Environmental Chemistry Laboratory suite, rooms 226 and 227 (room 226 is a chemical instrumentation laboratory).
Pass, Catch, and Kick Contest
Practice Fields by the Student Recreation Center
10:30am - 12:30pm
Two-person teams (an ESU student and an immediate family member) can compete in the qualifying rounds beginning at 10:30am - 12:30pm. Sign up at the Practice Fields by the Student Recreation Center. The top three teams will compete at halftime of the ESU football game in Welch Stadium and receive free ESU T-Shirts! Grand Prize: A Family Day Game Pack from the MU Bookstore. Other prizes include $50 and $25 gift certificates to the MU Bookstore.

Don’t forget your pre-game warm up! Bring your friends and family to the Black Hole before the Emporia State Hornets face the Augustana Vikings. Show your Hornet pride with ESU Athletics, E Zone, KISS 103.1, and ESU fans of all ages! The Black Hole is a fun and friendly tailgating experience, with music from KISS 103.1, free food, tons of free giveaways, and games for all ages. Bring sunglasses and sun block because the Black Hole will be sporting a beach theme for Family Day.

Join us for a Hog Wild lunch! Free meal tickets are available to two family members of new ESU students. All additional tickets are $5.00. Tickets can be purchased/picked up at the ESU I.D. Center in the Memorial Union beginning August 18, 2008 through August 29, 2008.
Enjoy live acoustic music during your lunch with Kansas native Shevy Smith. Growing up on a farm in central Kansas, Shevy Smith began her ventures into music by way of classical piano at age four. With influences like Tom Petty, Jackson Brown, and Sheryl Crow, she quickly transferred that energy into hours of quality time spent with her guitar.
Shevy is now represented by Wally’s World of Entertainment, www.houseofwally.com, a booking agency for musical artists who believe the college market is the foundation for their career.

Tickets for the ESU Football vs. Augustana game must be pre-ordered by September 5 by 5pm for discount. Welch Stadium Ticket Office opens at 11:30am on September 6, 2008. ESU International Food Festival

Join us after the ESU Football game for a variety of international foods from around the world. Past menus have included entrees such as enchiladas, arroz con pollo, bulogi, huminta, teriyaki chicken and spring rolls. Desserts ranged from sopapillas, to crepes or German apple pie.
