FACULTY SENATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING
December 5, 1996

Members present: Ballester, Butler, Calhoun, Greenlief, Irwin, McCoy, Payne, Terrell, Yanik

I. Call to order:

President Ron McCoy called the meeting to order at 12:05 p.m.

II. Announcements and Remarks:

A. Faculty President McCoy
1. President McCoy distributed copies of materials on post tenure review, the text of the speech given by John Welsh to the Legislature, and a letter from a faculty member expressing concerns about the maternity policy at ESU.
2. The Student Body Presidents are reconsidering what information they wish to post on the Web about instructors.
3. Pres. McCoy talked to a Bulletin reporter about the Senate accomplishments in the fall semester.

B. Vice President Payne
1. The Administration is discussing the prior approval in the catalog. They have discussed its origins and whether or not it should be removed. There was much discussion on the issue of prior approval. Sen. Greenlief mentioned that at his division's last faculty meeting, the faculty voted unanimously in favor of prior approval. There was some discussion of the value of separating the discussion on this issue into two areas, the basic issue of prior approval and the bill as it is currently written.
2. The issues of retraining chairs and increasing the effectiveness of advising within divisions were discussed.

III. Committee Reports:

A. Academic Affairs (Ballester)
This committee did not have a quorum, even though the chair set out agendas and sent e-mail to members. The prior approval bill was informally discussed. The Executive Committee discussed the issue of attendance problems in committee meetings. It was suggested that a letter be sent to committee members who are chronically absent.

B. Committee on Campus Governance (Terrell)
The evaluation form for Vice President Chris Farren was approved.

C. Faculty Affairs (Butler)
No report.

D. Faculty Handbook (Greenlief)
No report.

IV. Adjournment:

President McCoy adjourned the meeting at 1:30 p.m..
