FACULTY SENATE MEETING
September 3, 1996

1. Call to order:

President Ron McCoy called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m. in the Messenger Room.

2. Approval of Minutes:

Due to the illness of the student secretary the senate minutes from last May were not distributed.

3. Announcements and Remarks:

A. President Glennen:
1. President Glennen welcomed the senators at the beginning of the new Senate term and thanked them for their willingness to serve the university.
2. He announced the composition of the search committee for the new ESU president. The committee will consist of 4 faculty members, a dean, a classified employee, a unclassified employee, 2 students, 3 alumnae, a community representative, a former Board of Regent member, and Steve Jordan. After the September Board Meeting, this committee will draft a job description. The committee should start the screening process in November.
3. President Glennen reminded the senators of his call during the opening faculty session, to improve academic standards at ESU.

B. Vice President Payne:
1. Recently the Director of the Library Services and the Director of Continuing Education have resigned. A search committee is being currently being formed for the library position.
2. Final comments and suggestions are being considered on ESU's Vision 2020 statement. The Deans through their chairs will seek faculty input.
3. The senate will soon receive a proposal from the Teacher's College on a doctorate in instructional technology.
4. Over the summer several ESU divisional chairs met with their corresponding colleagues from members of the Heartland Alliance.

C. Faculty President McCoy:
1. On Aug. 9th, President McCoy received a copy of a letter addressed to ESU's administration addressing the need for this campus to develop a procedure to address the implementation of the chronic low performance statement which was passed last year.
2. As requested, President McCoy has forwarded to the Board of Regents office the names of eight faculty members for consideration of membership on the search committee for the new ESU president.
3. An Ad Hoc Committee on Opportunities for Academic Excellence is being formed to highlight successful academic practices on campus.

4. Committee Reports:

A. Academic Affairs (Ballester)

The committee will discuss the issues of prior approval and concurrent enrollment at its first meeting. Joe Yanik and Dwight Moore have been invited to provide background information on this topics. The committee will also discuss a request from the Athletic Board of Control about defining academic good standing in regard to extracurricular activities.

B. Committee on Campus Governance (Terrell)

This committee will review university committees under the provisions of the Sunset Bill. It may also work on revising the description of the committee in the Senate By Laws.

C. Faculty Affairs (Butler)

This committee will be considering the development of procedures for dismissal for cause under the chronic low performance statement.

D. Faculty Handbook (Greenlief)

This committee is eagerly awaiting the end of its need for existence. Work is continuing on the process of carefully annotating changes and ensuring the accuracy of the Faculty Handbook. Much discussion followed about when a hard copy of this handbook would be available. At present it is a work in progress.

5. For the Good of the Order

There will be a saxophone concert at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 5 in Albert Taylor Hall.

6. Adjournment

President McCoy adjourned the meeting at 4:25 P.M.
