Members present: Ballester, Butler, Calhoun, Greenlief, Irwin, Payne, Terrell, Yanik
Absent: McCoy

I. Call to order:

Senate Secretary Betsy Yanik called the meeting to order at 12:05 p.m.

II. Announcements and Remarks:

There were no announcements from Vice President Payne.

III. Committee Reports:

A. Academic Affairs (Ballester)
This committee continues to discuss the issues of prior approval and concurrent enrollment. Vision 2020 responses will be handled through divisional channels.

B. Committee on Campus Governance (Terrell)
The Committee will be reviewing senate committees but the parking committee does not fall under this category.

C. Faculty Affairs (Butler)
Senator Butler reported that he has been approached about making small grammatical changes in FSB96001. The committee agreed that this would not require Senate consideration. Senator Greenlief reported that his divisional was very upset to the point of considering impeachment of its senators , due to the procedure in which FSB96001 was adopted. Several faculty members pointed out that they had not received adequate knowledge of this legislation that affects the status of tenure. They opposed the legislation and believed the faculty as a whole were not appropriately informed. The Executive Committee discussed this topic at great length. It was pointed out that this legislation passed through the Senate in less than a month. This timing did not allow many divisions the opportunity to discuss the issue at their regularly scheduled divisional meetings. The time frame also did not allow time to obtain official AAUP opinion on the document. However it was pointed out that several of the principal authors of the KU document, the model for ESU's document, are AAUP members. It was suggested that at the next Senate meeting, senators should be reminded of their responsibility to communicate with their divisions. The need to educate the Regents about the necessity of adequate time to obtain faculty input was also discussed. Several members of the committee thought it would be worthwhile to discuss this with Regent Nolan during her upcoming visit. On the issue of the bill, FSB96001, additional changes may be called for if the Board of Regents does not accept the bill as written.

D. Faculty Handbook (Greenlief)
This committee continues to make progress on updating the faculty handbook.

IV. Adjournment:

Secretary Yanik adjourned the meeting at 1:40 p.m.
