FACULTY SENATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING
August 22, 1996
Members present: Ballester, Butler, Greenlief, Irwin, McCoy, Terrell, Yanik
Absent: Payne
I. Call to order:
President Ron McCoy called the meeting to order at 12:00 p.m.
II. Announcements and Remarks:
President McCoy began the meeting by distributing copies of the Senate Constitution and Bylaws, room assignments and schedules of Senate meetings, faculty handbook updates, and a memo concerning concurrent enrollment. The committee discussed how this issue was addressed last year. It was not placed on the Senate agenda as prescribed by the Senate Bylaws, however the issue was discussed in committee last year. This issue has been referred back to the Committee on Academic Affairs.
President McCoy stressed the value of keeping minutes of each Senate committee meeting. It was suggested that these minutes could also be placed on the Senate Web page.
The chairs were asked to remind all senators of the importance of their attendance at committee meetings.
A brief report was made about the administrative advance held on Aug. 19. The major projects mentioned for each college were as follows: Business School, their work toward gaining accreditation, SLIM, extending their programs to more sites, LA&S, the Year of the Arts, and Teacher's College, a major reorganization of their divisions. The ESU Foundation announced that approximately 23 million dollars had been raised in their Campaign 2000 project.
President McCoy listed several major issues that the Senate will be addressing such as program review, the search for a new president, faculty evaluations, and procedural issues concerning chronic low performance. The development of a procedure for dismissal for chronic low performance was referred to the Faculty Affairs Committee. Much discussion was held on the problem of meeting the Board of Regents deadlines concerning the development of this policy. The Board would ESU's policy by September 23. Since the first Faculty Affairs Committee will be held on Sept. 10, it appears highly unlikely that the Senate could produce a bill by Sept. 23. However the executive committee have agreed to make this a top priority. It was suggested that a timeline of our meetings on the issue would show our good faith effort in addressing this issue.
President McCoy recommended the formation of an ad hoc committee on academic excellence in response to President Glennen's remarks at the opening faculty meeting. This plan met with approval by the committee.
Past President Irwin informed the executive committee that President Glennen declined the request for a 2 course teaching reduction per term for the Senate President and an 1 course teaching reduction per term for the Senate Secretary. The Senate President will receive a 2 course reduction per term when he is also president of the Committee of Faculty Presidents.
III. Committee Reports:
Since the senate committees have not met this academic year, there were no committee reports.
IV. Adjournment:
President McCoy adjourned the meeting at 1:45 p.m.
