FACULTY SENATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING
November 21, 1996

Members present: Ballester, Butler, Calhoun, Greenlief, Irwin, McCoy, Terrell, Yanik
Absent: Payne

I. Call to order:

President Ron McCoy called the meeting to order at 12:05 p.m.

II. Announcements and Remarks:

A. Faculty President McCoy
1. The recent Gazette article on chronic low performance was not in line with what the Board of Regents has been describing as the need and purpose of the policy.
2. There is a need for anecdotal information about the loss of excellent faculty due to salary and/or lack of equipment. Please forward this information to President McCoy.
3. This morning several members of the Senate Executive Committee met with House of Representatives, Don Dahl, Joe Humerickhouse, Peggy Long, Lloyd Stone. and State Senator Jerry Karr. Faculty evaluations and the state's support of education were the principal topics of discussion.

III. Committee Reports:

A. Academic Affairs (Ballester)
Rod Sobieski visited the committee and suggested the committee create a bill to give the General Education Council the authority to oversee competency exams. The committee's prior approval bill had its first reading at the last Senate meeting.

B. Committee on Campus Governance (Terrell)
Senator Terrell is still working on the membership problem on the Student Publications Board. He has been asked about the university policy on faculty - student relationships. A Senate bill on this topic was passed in 1994.

C. Faculty Affairs (Butler)
This committee continued its discussion of university travel. John Blaufuss made a presentation to the committee about travel issues. Travel allocation is assigned within a division by the chair. For administrators, travel decisions are made at the presidential level or above.

D. Faculty Handbook (Greenlief)
This committee continues to make progress on updating the faculty handbook.

IV. Adjournment:

President McCoy adjourned the meeting at 1:45 p.m..
