Chair - Department of Biological Sciences
Dynamic chair to lead and sustain an environment of excellence. The chair leads
and guides a diverse faculty in a collegial environment, facilitates innovation
in teaching, research, and learning, manages and develops the department's
resources, and supports and expands departmental programs. The chair provides
leadership in implementing the departmental mission, and program review. The
chair will be expected to teach courses in his/her area of expertise.
Applicants must have a terminal degree in one of the Biological Sciences and a
record of excellence in teaching and scholarly activity. Preference will be
given to candidates with demonstrable administrative experience including
resource management, recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students,
promotion of university programs, and program development.
Specific duties of the Department Chair include:
•advertising, screening candidates, interviewing, and recommending appointments
of new faculty members in the Department;
•assigning and evaluating all faculty workloads and duties;
•leading the Department in establishing detailed criteria and procedures for
personnel evaluation and applying these criteria and procedures in making
recommendations to the Dean regarding re-appointment, tenure and promotion of
Departmental faculty;
•fostering faculty development in teaching and scholarly/creative activities;
•teaching each semester, including the summer session;
•serving as a liaison among faculty, students, administrators, and staff of the
University;
•supervising, evaluating and promoting programs within the Department;
•preparing and managing the Departmental budget;
•engaging in scholarly and/or creative activities appropriate to his/her
discipline;
•providing leadership in recruitment and retention of students for programs in
the Department;
•providing leadership to plan and implement Departmental and College goals and
objectives;
•encouraging creativity, program development, accountability, and research in
academic programs within the Department;
•understanding, promoting, and fostering the unique qualities of each academic
discipline within the Department;
•promote interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary programs.
•fostering and supporting the assessment of student learning, as well as the
evaluation of programs, the students, and the faculty in the department. Using
assessment and evaluation information for improvement.
Start Date: June 13, 2010. Review of applicants begins November 15, 2009 and
continues until position is filled.
