Scholarships
The Department of English is fortunate to have a number of scholarships for English majors and for students with an emphasis in journalism or creative writing. These scholarships are awarded annually and are generally intended for students already enrolled at ESU. Some of these are specified for students with particular qualifications, while others are awarded primarily on the basis of GPA.
Among the scholarship available to undergraduate students are
- The Sherry Jacks Bennett Scholarship, established by the R.D. and Joan Dale Hubbard Foundation in memory of the late Sherry Jacks Bennett, an ESU graduate who went on to teach English for several years.
- The Kay Alden Creative Writing Scholarship, established by ESU graduate Kay Alden and awarded annually to the person selected as the outstanding creative writing student.
- The Roahen-Rich-Ryan-Walton Scholarship in creative non-fiction writing, established by Roma Dove as a tribute to four outstanding English teachers with whom she worked as an ESU undergraduate.
- The Carolyn Boles Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of Ms. Boles, a dedicated teacher in the Divison for many years.
- Green Wyrick Creative Writing Quivira Scholarship
