Licensure Program in German

Program Description
This Teacher Education Program at ESU is designed to provide an undergraduate teaching degree in the following areas: French and/or German, and/or Spanish.  The courses making up the major curricula provide foreign language skills and pedagogical knowledge needed to teach language and content instruction to native English speakers or to speakers of other languages. The curricula reflect inter-divisional cooperation and incorporate courses from Modern Languages and Literatures and the Teachers College.

Option A: Two Teaching Fields

This degree prepares the student to teach German as well as another subject which has been declared in the first-teaching field (example: Math-German, History-German, French-German).  In addition to secondary teaching, this degree is excellent preparation for entry into various training programs in business and industry, government positions, and graduate school.  The 22 credit hours in German include work in language, literature, culture, composition, linguistics, and methodology.

General Information: General education requirements for the degree Bachelor of Science in Education are outlined in the schedule of classes in the undergraduate catalog.  Additional upper division requirements are stated in the catalog. Also, PY 211 and MA225 are required to enter this program

Requirements:
If major program of study is another discipline: 22 hours beyond the first-year courses (prerequisites) are required.  This includes the 19 above plus FL540 Language Teaching Methodology.  An oral interview is required upon entering the program and before graduation in order to evaluate progress and proficiency.  Graduates must attain an ACTFL Oral Proficiency rating of “Advanced Low.” Also, a 90% on the Wisconsin Test is necessary to be accepted in this program.  Moreover a student in good standing must maintain a 3.0 grade point average in the foreign language.

Option B: One Teaching Field

This degree prepares students to teach German in PK-12 schools, work in government agencies, business, and industry, or pursue graduate study.  The required 31 hours include studies in language, literature, culture, linguistics, and composition.

Recommendation: It is strongly recommended that all majors participate in an acceptable study program abroad in which they will be exposed to the target language and culture.
